Picks of the Week - NFL - Week 13

Hey, I actually won my Big Bet last week!!!  But, still underwater.  I hate this year.  A reminder, all bets are for $100 expect for the Big Bet, which is $250.  All losses incur a vig of 10%.  On to the picks.

Green Bay Packers +3 at Detroit Lions
Both squads are in a 3-way battle for conference supremacy (along with the Chicago Bears).  I am going to go with the Packers defense (3rd in Total Defense/4th in Scoring Defense/5th in Pass Defense/6th in Rush Defense) especially since they are getting points.  I cannot pick all 3 home teams on a short week, right?

Dallas Cowboys +3 1/2 v. Kansas City Chiefs
Fresh off a really ugly win over the Philadelphia Eagles, the Cowboys are getting points on a short week at home.  Kansas City had a great comeback over the Indianapolis Colts but are still in a life-or-death game every week in order to make the playoffs.  That is going to catch up to them eventually, and this number 3 offense is really clicking at this moment.

Baltimore Ravens -7 v. Cincinnati Bengals
Once gain home team/short week.  The Bengals should get a boost from the return of Joe Burrow, but their one-demensionality on offense (30th in rushing), could be detrimental against a rapidly-improving Baltimore Ravens defense that although 22nd in the NFL, that is serious improvement over the last few weeks from when they were ranked dead last.

Philadelphia Eagles -7 v. Chicago Bears
The Bears have pulled a lot of rabbits out of their collective hats, and on paper actually look a bit better than Philadelphia, but there is no question the Eagles are a better team.  And, they are at home on Friday, I'll give the points.

Jacksonville Jaguars -6 1/2 at Tennessee Titans
I know I should pick Tennessee as a home intra-divisional dog, but they just don't warrant the pick  right now, not at under a touchdown.  Next-to-last in offense and 26th in defense, facing a Jacksonville team that suddenly finds itself only 1 game behind the division-leading Colts in the AFC South.

Atlanta Falcons -2 1/2 at New York Jets
The J-E-T-S- Jets-Jets-Jets are awful.  Just awful.

Los Angeles Rams -10 1/2 at Carolina Panthers
Going to violate a gambling law no matter which way I pick, as Carolina is on a short week, but LA is traveling east and playing in the 1:00 window.  So, going against the double-digit favorite would be the next step, but I can't do that, as the Rams might be the best team in football, and the 49ers may have broken Carolina's spirit on Monday night by winning a game Carolina had every right to win.

Miami Dolphins -6 v. New Orleans Saints
Miami on a two-game winning streak; let's make it 3, and they cover.  Saints star Alvin Kamara is questionable for this week, and that could be a tremendous loss for a rookie quarterback.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers -2 1/2 v. Arizona Cardinals
It is looking like the Buccaneers are getting Bucky Irving back; not so much for Trey Benson and Arizona.  Although the Cardinals have looked better with Jacoby Brissett at the helm.

Cleveland Browns +4 1/2 v. San Francisco 49ers
Cleveland's defense is legitimate (3rd overall), and Shadeur Sanders does bring some swagger to the offense that the fourteen other starters didn't have this season.  Plus, San Francisco is playing in the Eastern Time Zone in the 1:00 window, AND on a short week.  Not to mention that they were basically handled by Carolina's defense, which isn't even close to as strong as Myles Garrett on his own.

Houston Texans +4 1/2 at Indianapolis Colts
As great as Cleveland's defense is, they are not even close to the level of the Houston Texans.  The number 1 defense versus the number 2 offense.  The big difference is that Houston's offense is mediocre, whereas Indianapolis' defense gives up a lot of yards (24th).  This game is close, maybe a field goal either way.

Minnesota Vikings +11 1/2 at Seattle Seahawks
The Seahawks absolutely win this game, as J.J. McCarthy has ... let's call it struggled.  But 11 1/2 is a lot of points.  A lot.  So, I'll take them.

Buffalo Bills -3 1/2 at Pittsburgh Steelers
Both teams in the playoff hunt, but the Bills have lost 2 out of 3 and 3 out of 6.  The Steelers have just looked - mediocre.  So long as Josh Allen doesn't turn the ball over, Bills win by 10.  But that is a big IF ...

Los Angeles Chargers -8 1/2 v. Las Vegas Raiders
Only 8 1/2?  Really?  And the Raiders might be without Ashton Jeanty.

Denver Broncos -6 at Washington Commanders
Denver should be fresher coming off of a bye.  And, playing against the 31st ranked defense in Total Defense that is also 29th against the pass (and 28th overall) might just be what Bo Nix needs to unlock Courtland Sutton, Evan Engram, Tony Franklin and the rest of the passing game.

New York Giants +7 1/2 at New England Patriots
The Patriots are better and will win, for sure.  But the Giants have played 4 straight relatively close games, and Jameis Winston is a national treasure.

BIG BET OF THE WEEK

Cleveland Browns +4 1/2 v. San Francisco 49ers
Cleveland's defense is legitimate (3rd overall), and Shadeur Sanders does bring some swagger to the offense that the fourteen other starters didn't have this season.  Plus, San Francisco is playing in the Eastern Time Zone in the 1:00 window, AND on a short week.  Not to mention that they were basically handled by Carolina's defense, which isn't even close to as strong as Myles Garrett on his own.
Getting points at home, with all of the surrounding situation for the 49ers as mentioned above.  I am betting on defense.

Picks of the Week - NFL Week 1

WE ARE BACK BABY!!!  The NFL, and NFL gambling!!!  The time when Thursday, Sunday and Monday (and the occasional Friday and Saturday) are consumed by professional football (and bets).  And now is also the time when every NFL fanbase is overly excited about their chances of winning a Super Bowl, and every gambler is overly excited about their chances of winning a mint!  (Sense a theme, here?!)  Anyway, we love this time of year, and you can expect this weekly column to be posted throughout the season.

For those new to WeMakeItRain, I will select each game, placing a $100 wager on all but one game.  That game, the Big Bet, will be for $250, and is obviously the one I think is the biggest guarantee of the week (yeah, right?!).  All picks are against the spread, and their will be no over/unders in this column until the playoffs (when the number of games is fewer).  Anyway, let's get straight to the picks!!!

Dallas Cowboys + 7 1/2 at Philadelphia Eagles
Yes Philadelphia is the defending champion.  Yes, they are the favorites to win again this year.  Yes, they return a whole lot of talent on offense.  But, they lost some talent on defense, especially in the secondary.  And although I expect them to win, I also expect Dallas to play better than a lot of people expect.  Sure they lost Micah Parsons.  But the Dallas offense is going to score a lot of points, especially with the addition of George Pickens who, although nowhere near as productive as he thinks he is good, is very talented and will take a lot of pressure from defensive coverage away from CeeDee Lamb.  Add in Javonte Williams who is only 25 years old, and the Cowboys WILL score.  This game seems like a back-door cover to me.  [Ed. Note - So it wasn't a back-door cover, as Dallas played way better than even I thought, I'll take the W!]

Los Angeles Chargers + 3 1/2 v. Kansas City Chiefs in Sao Paolo, Brazil
This game is being played in the world's 4th most populous metropolitan area, and the largest in the western hemisphere, and the Brazilian city gets a similarly huge quarterback battle between Patrick Mahomes and Justin Herbert.  Add to the fact that this is an early-season divisional game, and we could be looking at a classic tonight.  The Chargers loss of Tackle-extraordinaire Rashawn Slater will hurt theme more-and-more as the season progresses, but for now, everybody is fresh, and I expect both teams to spread the ball around to their entire offenses.  I don't know that Los Angeles will win, but I expect this game to be close.

Atlanta Falcons + 1 1/2 v. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
I hate taking road favorites in intra-divisional games, but this game started out as Tamps -2 1/2, which means the early money all floated to Atlanta. So, I might usually entertain going against the early money (lots of reasons for that).  And, although I expect this Tampa team to be explosive offensively, especially with the addition of Emeka Egbuka, the injury to Tristan Wirfs is HUGE.  Tampa is overall more talented and should win the division, I will just take the points at home.

New York Jets + 2 1/2 v. Pittsburgh Steelers
OK, I get it.  This seems ridiculous.  Pittsburgh has playoff aspirations and the Jets are, well the Jets.  But, we always have some surprises opening week, and Justin Fields - the Jets quarterback - did lead Pittsburgh to a 4-2 record when Russell Wilson was out last week.  Add to that the fact that Breece Hall might be auditioning for a trade (Chicago Bears, anyone?), and this Jets offense could keep it close.  Plus, the Jets defense has Quinnen Williams on the defensive line and Sauce Gardner at corner, as well as possibly the most underrated defender in the NFL, Jamien Sherwood, at linebacker.  The big question for Pittsburgh is can DK Metcalf turn an aging-superstar - who shall remain nameless - back into his former self?  Gimme the points.  And, I have a big feeling I will regret this pick.

Miami Dolphins +1 1/2 at Indianapolis Colts
This pick is as much about the Colts QB position as anything else.  Daniel Jones being selected over Anthony Richardson as the starter says a lot about the Colts decision to draft Richardson 4th overall than anything else.  Miami, on the other hand, looks flawed, but always plays better with a healthy Tuanigamanuolepola, and he is healthy at least for the start of the season.  Tyreek Hill has to have a better season than last year, and the return of pass rushers Bradley Chubb and Jaelyn Phillips can be enormous for a defense that also brought back Minkah Fitzpatrick.

Carolina Panthers +3 1/2 at Jacksonville Jaguars
I am bullish on the Panthers, as Bryce Young was exponentially better the last half of last year than prior (imagine that, a player DEVELOPING?!), and they brought in Tetairoa McMillan as a weapon on the outside.  I am equally bearish on the Jaguars, and I feel this might be the year that the Trevor Lawrence (Experience/Experiment?) comes to an end in Jacksonville.

New York Giants + 5 1/2 at Washington Commanders
Man, those Giants sure had a great pre-season, and they seem so loose with Jameis Winston leading the way.  Hell, even as a backup QB that guy should be the captain.  And Malik Nabors might just be enough weapons for an experienced Russell Wilson at quarterback.  With superstar Dexter Lawrence around to take some pressure off some amazing looking young pass rushers like Brian Burns with Kayvon Thibodeaux and rookie Abdul Carter SHOULD (well Burns isn't exactly young).  Jayden Daniels is amazing, and Deebo Samuel added to a wide receiving corps that already has Terry McLaurin should do well in the long run, but week 1 can be weird, and Daniels may not always have enough time to reach his wide receivers.  Washington still wins, but close.

Arizona Cardinals -6 1/2 at New Orleans Saints
The Saints very well could be fighting for the number 1 draft pick next year.  Six and a half points is a lot on the road, but gotta take some chances.  The question for Arizona is, as always, is Kyler Murray actually any good, or are we as sports fans punished by not getting to see his baseball career?

Cleveland Browns + 5 1/2 v. Cincinnati Bengals
How many times have we been surprised by Joe Flacco keeping a team in a game that they have no business being in?  And although there are no stars, the Browns do have a plethora of running backs and receivers from which to choose.  Expect a Cedric Tillman breakout.  With Myles Garrett being Myles Garret, Mason Graham will have a great opportunity to produce from the interior of the defensive line.  And if Denzel Ward and Greg Newsome can be what scouts think they can, this defense could be legit.  That being said, Cincinnati is the more talented team, especially on offense, and should win this game.  But Cleveland will keep it close, especially at home.  Remember I hate road favorites in intra-divisional games.

New England Patriots -2 1/2 v. Las Vegas Raiders
Lots of hype with the Raiders and Ashton Jeanty, and with Geno Smith coming over, this team finally has a QB upon whom they can depend.  But, this axiom is important, west coast teams traveling east and playing in the 1:00 time slot fail to cover about 2/3rds of the time.  Drake Maye had a great start to his career, and could really blossom this year, especially with rookie Trayveon Henderson running the ball and Stefon Diggs running routes.  Taking the home team.

San Francisco 49ers -1 1/2 at Seattle Seahawks
Once again, the dreaded road favorite in an intra-divisional game, but it is only 1 1/2 points - not too much.  Especially since this Seahawks team overall is not very talented.  Sure Jaxon Smith-Njigba is really good, and Kenneth Walker can be - when healthy - but just not on the same level as McCaffrey, George Kittle, Trent Williams, Nick Bosa, Fred Warner, Kyle Juszczyk and a possible breakout year for Ricky Pearsall.  Gimme the Niners.

Denver Broncos -8 1/2 v. Tennessee Titans
No non-Titans fan is as excited about Cam Ward's potential as a quarterback in the NFL than I am, excepting perhaps his family, but Tennessee just don't have the same talent Denver does.  Bo Nix looks like a budding superstar, Courtland Sutton is an upper-echelon receiver, and on the other side of the ball Patrick Surtain II and Nik Bonitto are as good as anybody at their positions.  Calvin Ridley will give some relief to Ward, but Denver is the class of this game.

Green Bay Packers -1 1/2 v. Detroit Lions
I, like most everyone else, might just be lowering Detroit's expectations because of the loss of Offensive Coordinator Ben Johnson (to the Bears) and Defensive Coordinator Aaron Glenn (to the Jets), more importantly might be the losses of center Frank Ragnow (retirement) and Guard Kevin Zeitler (Tennessee Titans).  But, with lots and lots of talent all over the field (St. Brown, Gibbs, Sewell, Hutchinson, Branch, et. al.) I have a feeling that the Lions will still be in the playoffs.  However, the addition of Micah Parsons may just elevate the Packers from the playoffs to conference championship level.  Being at home, I will take the Packers.

Houston Texans +3 1/2 at Los Angeles Rams
Yes, I know that people consider the Rams Super Bowl contenders this year, but remember where we thought Houston could be last year, at least before Niko Collins was hurt.  And now he is back.  And I get more than a FG?  Yes, please!

Baltimore Ravens -1 1/2 at Buffalo Bills
Let's be honest, I consider the Ravens the class of the AFC this year.  Buffalo is right there with them, and this game is at home, but Jackson fresh off the insult - real or perceived - of Allen winning the MVP last year, and with the addition of Jaire Alexander into the defensive backfield as a corner, to team with safety Kyle Hamilton, this Ravens team might be its best of this iteration.  Gotta start by winning this one on the road, or else they will have to travel on the road in January.

Chicago Bears +1 1/2 v. Minnesota Vikings
You already know what I think about road favorites in intra-divisional games.  Add to that the new faces in the Bears coaching staff - not only Ben Johnson (HC) and Dennis Allen (DC) but also Eric Bienenmy (RB) - and the fact that a healthy Jaylon Johnson (IF he is healthy) is one of the few corners that can limit Justin Jefferson, and this might just be the perfect start for the Bears.  Monday night at home and the possibility of taking out a division foe with an essentially rookie QB?  And I am getting points?  Thank you!

BIG BET:

I really like taking home teams as my Big Bet, so if I can find one getting points, usually better.  That leaves out Houston and Carolina, since they are both on the road.   I hate giving points on the road, so that leaves out San Francisco, which I also considered.  Denver was another consideration, but 8 1/2 was just TOO many.  So basically, my decision was between Cleveland and Tampa, and Cincinnati has been starting slow out of the gate recently, so, here we are ...  Already hating my Big Bet.

Picks of the Week

Two pummeling weeks in a row, although this time mostly because of the Big Bet.  But seriously, who saw Cleveland covering the spread against Baltimore, much less winning outright.  And that Jayden Daniels Hail Mary, now forever remembered as the Tyrique Stevenson play!  Football, amirite?

For those that are new to this site, I will select every game against the spread.  I will be selecting one big bet at $250 per, whereas everything else will be $100.  Winners count as winners, whereas, losses will be calculated including a 10% vig to make the math that much simpler.  On to the picks.

Houston Texans +2 1/2 at New York Jets
I saw this one coming a mile away.  I even commented to several people that this line looked way too easy.  But I fell for it anyway.  Home team on a short week.  Home team on a short week.  Home team on a short week.  I feel like I need to Bart Simpson a chalkboard with this saying.

Baltimore Ravens -8 1/2 v. Denver Broncos
Denver's defense is really good; 7th against the run, 4th against the pass, 3rd in scoring defcnse and 3rd in total defense.  But, this is a Baltimore revenge game after last week's embarrasing loss.

Cincinnati Bengals -7 1/2 v. Las Vegas Raiders
Yes there is only 1 game difference between these two teams, and yes Cincinnati's strength (7th in passing offense) could be counteracted by Las Vegas' strenght (7th in passing defense, but Cincy scores a lot more than the Raiders, and the Raiders are a Pacific time zone team travelling east and playin gin the 1:00 slot.  So, I am just going to adhere to the football gambling rules and take the home team (although not sure where the falling back hour enters the equation).

New England Patriots +3 at Tennessee Titans
The Titans defense is good to great, but their offense is pathetic.  The Patriots are just bad, but they get Drake Maye back, and that has to count for something.

New Orleans Saints -7 1/2 at Carolina Panthers
Yes I am taking a road intradivisional favorite, but I think Carolina has proven time-and-time again just how bad they really are.  And, Derek Carr returns for New Orleans.

Atlanta Falcons -3 1/2 v. Dallas Cowboys
Dallas' run game is truly horrific (last in the league) and now Ezekial Elliott is left home for disciplinary reasons.  Is Dallas falling apart, or will they rally? We don't really know, but Atlanta's pass offense is 6th in the NFL and Dallas's pass defense is 20th, so I will go with any rally falls short.

Buffalo Bills -6 v. Miami Dolphins
Yes Tuanigamatualepola Tagavialoa has a game under his belt after returning from the league's concussion protocol, but he was healthy and at home in Week 2's 31-10 loss to these same Bills, who have the 5th-highest scoring team in the NFL, and the 6th-best scoring defense.

Cleveland Browns -1 1/2 v. Los Angeles Chargers
Cleveland beat Baltimore last week behind Jameis Winston at quarterback.  Could it have been a fluke?  Of course it could, bet let's not forget that we saw them make the playoffs last year with Joe Flacco.  Plus, this is a 1:00 game in the Eastern time zone in which the visiting team traveled from the Pacific Time Zone.

Washington Commanders -4 at New York Giants
If ever there was a game for a let down, this one could be it for the Commanders after last week's disastrous let down in the fourth quarter only to be victorious on the hail mary.  And, I would think that betting-wise, especially given that Washington is an intra-divisional road favorite; however, the Giants played Monday night, and thus are on a short week.  Washington continues its resurgence.

Chicago Bears +2 at Arizona Cardinals
The Bears have demoted Tyrique Stevenson for this game, but he will play.  Not sure how this team adjusts after that crazy ending last week in Washington, but ARizona is 26th against the pass, and D.J. Moore is due for a crazy game.

Philadelphia Eagles -7 1/2 v. Jacksonville Jaguars
Philly has won 3 in a row after losing to Cleveland in week 6, and have had two blowouts on the road in the past two weeks.  They are getting hot, and Jacksonville - despite playing tough against Green Bay - is not.  The Jaguars are 31st in defensing the pass, and Philadelphia has all of its weapons - including A.J. Brown and Devonta Smith.

Seattle Seahawks +2 v. Los Angeles Rams
Two teams that I absolutely cannot figure out for the life of me.  Both could end up 6-11 or 7-10; or in the second round of the playoffs.  Crazy.  Just taking the points.

Detroit Lions -2 1/2 at Green Bay Packers
So, a third intradivisional favorite makes me nervous; but Detroit really looks like the best team in football right now.  The offense is humming (4th overall and 1st in scoring); the defense - although not great overall (20th) - has its strengths (1st in 3rd down percentage; 5th in rush defense and 8th in scoring defense).  Green Bay also has a prodigious offense (5th in rushing, 6th total offense and scoring offense, and 8th in passing offense), but their defense is way more pedestrian.  Not bad, just pedestrian.  Plus, with Jordan Love playing but perhaps at less than 100%, the Lions take a big jump toward home-field advantage in the playoffs.

Indianapolis Colts +5 1/2 at Minnesota Vikings
A move to Joe Flacco could help jump start this team, given the Colts a passing threat to help make room for Jonathan Taylor.  And the fact that this change came at the demand of several of the team's leaders themselves, means the rest of the team could be rallying behind Flacco (like Cleveland last year?).  Not sure they win, but they should keep this close.

Kansas City Chiefs -9 v. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
This is a lot of points to give up.  A LOT.  And, if I told you the team with the 2nd best passing offense, the 4th  best scoring offense, the 5th best total offense and the 10th best rushing offense was playing on Monday - you would agree that the Chiefs are a great offense.  Except those rankings are the Buccaneers. But, and it's a big BUT - like Kim Kardashian level - that was when Tampa Bay had receivers.  Without receivers, this KC defense (2nd against the rush, 2nd in total defense, and 5th in scoring defense) will be too suffocating at home.

Big Bet:

Cleveland Browns -1 1/2 v. Los Angeles Chargers
Cleveland beat Baltimore last week behind Jameis Winston at quarterback.  Could it have been a fluke?  Of course it could, bet let's not forget that we saw them make the playoffs last year with Joe Flacco.  Plus, this is a 1:00 game in the Eastern time zone in which the visiting team traveled from the Pacific Time Zone.
I know this sounds crazy, but I like to pick home teams either getting points, or giving just a few, so this game fits the bill.  And, we cannot view this team as the Cleveland Browns from most of the rest of the year as DeShaun Watson is not playing.  He was the biggest hinderance on this offense.  Look for two of Cedric Tillman, Elijah Moore and Jerry Jeudy to approach (or hit) 100 yards receiving with Winston flinging and the Chargers' defense focused on a healthier Nick Chubb.

Picks of the Week - Wilcard Weekend!!!

Ended the season with a great 10-6 record, meaning my overall record for the regualar season is GREAT at 30 games over .500!  I am ridiculously satisfied with this season to date.  My only hope is to keep rolling through the playoffs!  Let's see how that goes!!  And, just as a reminder, the Chicago Bears have the #1 overall pick!!!  Open for business!!!

For those that are new to this site, I will select every game against the spread.  I will be selecting one big bet at $250 per, whereas everything else will be $100.  Winners count as winners, whereas, losses will be calculated including a 10% vig to make the math that much simpler.  On to the picks.

Cleveland Browns -2 at Houston Texans
This Browns defense finished the season 1st overall, 1st in 3rd down percentage, and 1st against the pass - which is Houston's offensive strength.  And, with the resurgence of Joe Flacco, especially to Amari Cooper, I am not sure the 23rd ranked pass defense can stop Cleveland.  Plus, the Browns just annihilated the Texans 36-22 in Houston on week 16 (and I say annihilate because that game was not even that close.  And sure, Davis Mills and Case Keenum quarterbacked Houston instead of C.J. Stroud, but that defense will be the same.

Cleveland Browns at Houston Texans OVER 44 1/2
Flacco will lead Cleveland to score over 30 just on their own.

Kansas City Chiefs -4 1/2 v. Miami Dolphins
The winner of this game is simply ... the WEATHER.  It will be sub-zero cold, literally.  Probably not good enough weather to re-energize either of these stagnant offenses, but Miami just has too many injuries, especially along its O-line (Conner Williams) and D-Line (Bradley Chubb and Jaelen Phillips), and other players playing - but hobbled.

Miami Dolphins at Kansas City Chiefs UNDER 43 1/2
Likely lots of running which eats up the clock, especially on long scoring drives.  I expect Isaiah Pacheco to have a monster game.

Buffalo Bills -9 1/2 v. Pittsburgh Steelers
This might be Mike Tomlin's best coaching job to guide this team into the playoffs. Buffalo is on a roll haveing won 5 in a row, and Pittsburgh's defense, which was 22nd overall, 19th against the rush, and 17th against the pass - with T.J. Watt - is not going to stop Buffalo without him.  Another game where the weather will be a challenge, but I expect Buffalo to win handily.

Pittsburgh Steelers at Buffalo Bills OVER 33 1/2
Yes, you read that correctly, 33 1/2.  That is a super-low over/under because of the weather, but I submit, bad weather helps scoring sometimes, with a fumble here, a slipping defender there.  Gotta take the over on this one.

Green Bay Packers +7 at Dallaw Cowboys
This Dallas team has been up-and-down and face a surprising Green Bay Packers team that is much, much better with Aaron Jones in the lineup.  I expect the Cowboys to advance, but it should be a tight one.

Green Bay Packers at Dallas Cowboys OVER 50 1/2
This game could be a shootout - and that is what I am betting.'

Detroit Lions -3 v. Los Angeles Rams
Would you want to disappoint Dan Campbell with a first-round playoff loss?  Yeah, me either.

Los Angeles Rams at Detroit Lions OVER 51 1/2
This is the 5th-highest scoring offense (Detroit) versus the 8th-highest scoring offense (Los Angeles), with both teams in the bottom third in scoring defense.  This means ... POINTS!!!

Tampa Bay Buccaneers +3 v. Philadelphia Eagles
Tampa Bay getting points at home to a struggling Eagles team that lost 5 of its last 6, and its lone win a one-possession victory over the Giants.  Add to that fact that A.J. Brown is out, and Devonta Smith is hobbled, and all of a sudden it is harder to score on Tampa's 29th-ranked passing defense.  Should Philly rely on the run, Tampa is stout there - 5th in the NFL.

Philadelphia Eagles at Tampa Bay Buccaneers UNDER 43 1/2
Tampa is not going to give up a lot of points to Philadelphia (maybe 10 or 14), and likely won't score enough to push this to the over.

Big Bet I:

Tampa Bay Buccaneers +3 v. Philadelphia Eagles
Tampa Bay getting points at home to a struggling Eagles team that lost 5 of its last 6, and its lone win a one-possession victory over the Giants.  Add to that fact that A.J. Brown is out, and Devonta Smith is hobbled, and all of a sudden it is harder to score on Tampa's 29th-ranked passing defense.  Should Philly rely on the run, Tampa is stout there - 5th in the NFL.
Baker Mayfield has played big in the playoffs before, and I feel that he will come through again!

Big Bet II:

Cleveland Browns at Houston Texans OVER 44 1/2
Flacco will lead Cleveland to score over 30 just on their own.
I shied away from picking Cleveland as my big bet since they are on the road and giving up points, as opposed to Tampa at home getting points, but I can double that up here by relying on 3 Tds between Njoku and Cooper, plus more from Cleveland.

Picks of the Week

I guess putting some thought and analysis into games can help.  13-2 BABY!!!  Quite possibly my best week ever, even including weeks before I kept this blog.  Now, I know that a reversal is coming, and probably deserved, so I am going to tempt fate and just brag about this week for a while, until that reversal occurs!

For those that are new to this site, I will select every game against the spread.  I will be selecting one big bet at $250 per, whereas everything else will be $100.  Winners count as winners, whereas, losses will be calculated including a 10% vig to make the math that much simpler.  On to the picks.

Jacksonville Jaguars +2 1/2 at New Orleans Saints
There would have to be a very compelling reason for me to select the visiting team on a short week.  The Jaguars getting points is that compelling reason.

Chicago Bears +2 1/2 v. Las Vegas Raiders
The obvious selection here is the Raiders, but when not one, but TWO backup quarterbacks will be starting a game, strange things will happen, like maybe a 8-6 Raiders victory!

Cleveland Browns -3 1/2 at Indianapolis Colts
I don't think this Colts offense - even with Jonathan Taylor - will be able to do much against the Browns defense, which is 1st overall, 1st in passing defense, 1st in third-down percentage, 3rd in rushing defense, and 5th in scoring defense.

Buffalo Bills -8 at New England Patriots
This New England team cannot score points (31st in the league at 12 per game), and they cannot teams from scoring (Tied for 24th in the league.)  Meanwhile, Buffalo is 3rd in scoring and 3rd in scoring defense.

New York Giants +3 v. Washington Commanders
I actually like thsi Commanders squad a little bit more than most, but I am making this selection on a feeling that Saquon Barkley with a game under his belt is going to be closer to his real self, and that will open up some passing lanes for Darren Waller as well.  Close game, so I will take the points.

Atlanta Falcons +2 1/2 at Tampa Bay Buccaneers
For all of the tealk about the 3-2 Buccaneers being the surprise team in the NFC South, the 3-3 Atlanta Falcons are about even or better in most offensive stats, and are 2nd in the NFL in total defense.  Imagine if they had a quarterback?!

Detroit Lions +3 at Baltimore Ravens
This is strength on strength.  Detroit's 3rd-ranked offense versus Baltimore's 3rd-ranked defense.  The Lions are the number 4 passing team in the league and 8th rushing team.  Baltimore is the 2nd-best passing defense and 9th-best rushing defense.  Detroit is the 4th-highest scoring team, and Baltimore is the 4th stingiest defense.  The difference?  Detroit's defense is better than Baltimore's offense.

Arizona Cardinals +9 1/2 at Seattle Seahawks
Arizona is a really bad squad, on both sides of the ball, with the exception that they use to be able to run the ball with James Conner - but he is on IR.  But, Seattle isn't THAT good to  be giving up 9 plus points.  They only score 24 a game, and give up 21.6.  I'll take the points and avoid watching this game.

Los Angeles Rams -3 1/2 v. Pittsburgh Steelers
I have won several games selecting Pittsburgh as an underdog this year.  But not this game against this offense.  The Rams are 5th in total offense and 6th in passing.  The Steelers are 30th in total defense and 25th in passing defense.  I expect the Rams to put up more than enough points to coast, even if TJ Watt gets a sack or two.

Green Bay Packers -1 at Denver Broncos
Only because Aaron Jones returning makes him the best player on the field for either team.  Another game to avoid watching!

Kansas City Chiefs -6 v. Los Angeles Chargers
Kansas City hasn't exactly been lighting teams up.  With the exception of the Bears game, KC has played teams pretty close, including a boring 19-8 performance against the Broncos last week.  So, taking the points seems obvious here.  But, then we see the Chargeres are last in the league in passing defense and next-to-last in total defense, so if there is a team against which the Chiefs could solve some of their offensive problems, this would be it.  And ... the Chargers played Monday night, so they are on a short week.

Miami Dolphins +3 at Philadelphia Eagles
These are the two best offenses in the league.  The Eagles defense is just a bit better than the Dolphins.  When something is seemingly close, I'll take the points.  I don't like this pick though, and I wouldn't like it if I picked Philly, either.

San Francisco 49ers -6 1/2 at Minnesota Vikings
San Francisco looked good - or at least as good as any offense has looked against the Browns this year - in a loss, whereas the Vikings looked bad in a win against the lowly Bears.  I expect San Francisco to bounce back in a big way.

Big Bet:

Cleveland Browns -3 1/2 at Indianapolis Colts
I don't think this Colts offense - even with Jonathan Taylor - will be able to do much against the Browns defense, which is 1st overall, 1st in passing defense, 1st in third-down percentage, 3rd in rushing defense, and 5th in scoring defense.
I don't like any of these picks strongly enough to make them my big bet, so I landed here.  I don't like this one because I hate giving up points on the road; but so was Atlanta.  I thought about the Giants at home, but I am not comfortable with that pick.  KC merited consideration, but they have been a bit sluggish.  In short, I just felt more confident in Cleveland than anybody else.

Picks of the Week

So this past week is more the norm for most seasoned gamblers; tremendously close.  We just hope that we finish slightly ahead most week; and thankfully that happened last week.  I will always take a plus week.  Can I keep that up?  We shall see.  For those that are new to this site, I will select every game against the spread.  I will be selecting one big bet at $250 per, whereas everything else will be $100.  Winners count as winners, whereas, losses will be calculated including a 10% vig to make the math that much simpler.  On to the picks...

Cincinnati Bengals -4 v. Miami Dolphins
Two Thursday night wins in a row!  Follow the rules and everything eventually comes out allright.

Chicago Bears +3 at New York Giants
I am accused of picking the Bears because they are my favorite team.  I would not do that to my wallet.  I am 1-1-1 on Bears picks this year so far.  I pick them here not because in the back recesses of my mind I think they will win, but because I am getting 3 points against a team that is playing a 1:00 game on a short week.  Plus, the Bears are the numbr 2 rushing offense in the NFL and the Giants are the 25th rushing defense.  I will gladly take those points, especially with Leonard Williams out.

Minnesota Vikings -4 1/2 v. New Orleans Saints (in London)
No Jameis Winston, no Alvin Kamara, no Michael Thomas, no Noah Vannet, no Andrus Peat, no Marcus Maye, etc., etc., etc.

Los Angeles Chargers -6 at Houston Texans
If you look just at the scores, you would think that Houston has played everyone tough and close - and you would be right.  But, you really have to look at the real numbers.  Houston is 29th in total offense (25th in passing, 27th in rushing, and 26th in scoring) all while being in last in third-down conversions.  On defense Houston is 31st, while being last in rushing defense.  Their salvation, tied for 12th in scoring defense.  Those numbers cannot hold.  I'll take the Chargers.

Detroit Lions -3 1/2 v. Seattle Seahawks
Detroit went from playing everyone tough last year to actually playing this year, at least on offense.  The Lions are 2nd in scoring offense, 3rd in total offense and rushing offense.  Yes, they will miss Amon-Ra St. Brown, and yes the defense isn't quite up to the offense's levels (last in scoring defense), but Seattle is a poor offensive team.  I'll take the Lions.

Philadelphia Eagles -6 1/2 v. Jacksonville Jaguars
In most seasons, a 2-1 Jaguars team that is first in their division would be the story to date in the NFL.  Not this year.  The story this year is the Philadelphia Eagles and their dynamic offense (1st overall, 3rd in passing, 5th in scoring and 7th in rushing - not to mention 2nd in 3rd down conversions.)  The Jags are lead by their defense however (1st in rushing, 4th in scoring, 7th in total defense), but their 21st ranked passing defense will let them down.  They have nobody to cover A.J. Brown and Devonta Smith.

New York Jets +3 1/2 at Pittsburgh Steelers
Zach Wilson is back, but I am not sold on him yet.  What I am sold on is that the Steelers defense is lousy (17th in scoring, 22nd in passing, 25 in total, 28th in rushing), and their offense is even worse (last in total offense, 28th in passing, 22nd in rushing, and thanks to some defensive touchdowns, 19th in scoring).  And Pittsburgh is GIVING points.  I'll take them.

Cleveland Browns -1 at Atlanta Falcons
Stop me if you have heard this before ... Cleveland has the number 1 rushing offense in the NFL.  They will bruise and batter the Falcons, who are a respectable 16th against the run, but 23rd in total defense and 26th in scoring defense.

Tennessee Titans +3 1/2 at Indianapolis Colts
Neither of these teams are where they thought they would be at this point, but both teams had their first victory - and good ones at that - last week, with the Titans beating the Raiders and the Colts defeating the Chiefs.  Both teams have been below par offensively, while the Colts have at least been playing defense (6th against the rush, 3rd overall.)  I, however, don't think the offensive rankings are indicative of either of these teams capabilities, so I am just going to take the points.

Dallas Cowboys -3 v. Washington Commanders
I just love typing "Commanders" instead of "Football Team" and "Racists."  But, I am going to take Dallas here.  Their offense has been very respectable under Cooper Rush, and they are at home.  Washington's previously strong defense has not been so this year (28th in total defense and scoring defense).  Washington has been winning the third down battles on offense (6th) and defense (5th), but that isn't sustainable when you aren't getting the job done on the other downs.

Buffalo Bills -3 at Baltimore Ravens
This game should be incredibly exciting.  The Ravens have the top scoring offense in the NFL while the Bills are 3rd.  However, the Bills have the number 1 passing offense and the Ravens are last in the NFL (granted a lot of that occurred in 1 game, but still).  Giving the points on the road because of the Bills defense (1st overall, 2nd in rushing and passing, 4th in scoring.)

Arizona Cardinals +1 at Carolina Panthers
Nobody wants to watch this game.  I mean nobody.

Denver Broncos +2 1/2 at Las Vegas Raiders
The Raiders at 0-3 are the most disappointing team so far in the NFL.  They are 28th in rushing offense, 21st in total defense, and just generally boring.  Denver has been playing great defense (2nd in scoring, 3rd in total and passing, 6th in rushing) and are getting points in a division rivalry.  I'll take the points.

Green Bay Packers -9 1/2 v. New England Patriots
I know, I know Bill Belichick blah, blah, blah.  Also Brain Hoyer.  I would actually be excited to see Bailey Zappe come and sling it around, but we probably won't.  At least I have Damien Harris in fantasy.

Kansas City Chiefs +1 1/2 at Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Tampa's offense has been horrible (28th in total offense, 25th in rushing offense, 22nd in passing and 22nd in scoring).  The defense has given up the fewest points in the NFL, but we all know Kansas City can score points.  So, I'll take some here.

Los Angeles Rams +1 1/2 at San Francisco 49ers
The Rams offense has been paltry so far this year, but they have too many players for that to last.  Unfortunately they are runing up against a tough 49ers defense (1st against the pass, 2nd in total defense, 3rd in scoring defense and 4th against the run.)  Everything says take the 49ers at home.  So, I am going the opposite direction.  The Rams finally shed their Super Bowl hangover.

Big Bet:

Detroit Lions -3 1/2 v. Seattle Seahawks
Detroit went from playing everyone tough last year to actually playing this year, at least on offense.  The Lions are 2nd in scoring offense, 3rd in total offense and rushing offense.  Yes, they will miss Amon-Ra St. Brown, and yes the defense isn't quite up to the offense's levels (last in scoring defense), but Seattle is a poor offensive team.  I'll take the Lions.
Detroit is playing at home, and not giving up too many points - which is the recipe I like for a big bet.  My other thoughts were the Chargers (giving up points on the road), Philadelphia (giving up too many points) and the Browns on the road).   Man, I really want to take Cleveland here.

Picks of the Week

Hello Friends.  That's right, it is Masters Sunday.  And nobody is as psyched as I am for a slate of early games ending as the Masters Champion is crowned.  Too bad Dustin Johnson left himself a four-shot cushion, because this was shaping up to be a great battle after the second round.

As always, any late breaking Covid cancellations will not count, and if some games are moved to Monday or Tuesday, I suppose I will revise as necessary, depending upon who is out with the Covid.

For those that are new to this site, I will select every game against the spread.  I will be selecting one big bet at $250 per, whereas everything else will be $100.  Winners count as winners, whereasv, losses will be calculated including a 10% vig to make the math that much simpler.  On to the picks.

Tennessee Titans +1 v. Indianapolis Colts
Remember way back three weeks ago when people were discussing the Titans as being the best team in the NFL?  Well, their punter isn't.

Carolina Panthers +6 1/2 v. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Yes, I know Carolina is without Christian McCaffrey, but this spread just seems a little high. I look for Teddy Two Gloves (is their a better mafia nickname in the NFL) and a resurgent Curtis Samuel, to have good enough games against Tampa's middling pass defense (14th in the league) to keep this game close, amd Joey Slye to have a bunch of field goals.

Cleveland Browns -3 1/2 v. Houston Texans
Nick Chubb is activated just in time to face the NFL's worst run defense.  I expect Chubb to make up for lost time.

Washington Football Team +3 v. Detroit Lions
When I first saw this line, I immediately said, "Detroit, clearly".  (Well, maybe I shouldn't have used quotation marks because I didn't actually say it, but you know what I mean.)  But looking into it, yes the offense struggle smightily (30th overall in both total offense and scoring offense), but the defense has been stout (6th in total defense, 1st in passing defense).  Their struggles against the run (23rd in rush defense) should not be a problem against the Lions 24th ranked rush offense).

Green Bay Packers -13 1/2 v. Jacksonville Jaguars
Now that Aaron Rodgers has his fellow Aaron running mate back (Aaron Jones), this offense should kill against the NFL's 31st ranked scoring defense, 29th ranked total defense, 28th ranked passing defense, and 27th ranked rushing defense).  Suddenly, the Jaguars are in the running for Trevor Lawrence/Justin Fields.

New York Giants +4 v. Philadelphia Eagles
The Giants have played really close games lately, winning by 3 last week over Washington, then playing games decided by 2 (loss), 1 (loss), 1 (win), and 3 (loss) respectively to Tampa Bay, Philadelphia, Washington and Dallas in the four games prior.  There is no reason to think this is a four point game.  And, I cannot believe I am typing this, but this is an incredibly important game with playoff implications.

Los Angeles Chargers +2 at Miami Dolphins
I feel that everyone is jumping on the Dolphins by virtue of their two consective wins behind Tuanigamanuaepola Tagavailoa, but it is Justin Herbert that has actually been putting up numbers.  The Chargers have a wonderful offense (2nd overall, 5th in passing offense, 8th in rushing offense), which should be too much for the Dolphins, who do celebrate the return of linebacker Kyle van Noy.   Los Angeles benefits from the 4:00 start.

Arizona Cardinals -2 1/2 v. Buffalo Bills
Listen, I realize that this Bills team is way better than we all thought, and that was even coming off a playoff season.  But, their middle-of-the-road defense might have their hands full with Arizona's 3rd ranked total offense (2nd in rushing), which will also see the return of Kenyan Drake.

Las Vegas Raiders -4 v. Denver Broncos
I have not been able to figure either of these teams out (although my pick of Denver a number of weeks ago against New England was widely scorned - even though correct), so I am just taking the home team.

Pittsburgh Steelers -7 v. Cincinnati Bengals
Joe Burrow has at least made Cincinnati's offense exciting, but this game does not bode well for the Bengals.  Pittsburgh has the 7th best total defense, 5th best pass defense, 9th best rush defense and 4th best scoring defense.  AND, Ben Roethlisberger can play despite being exposed to Vance McDonald, who was diagnosed with Covid-19.

Los Angeles Rams -2 1/2 v. Seattle Seahawks
Russel Wilson hs led Seattle to the number 1 socring offense, passing offense and total offense, which they need desperately because their defense is 30th in scoring defense, and dead last in passing defense and total defense.  I feel that Sean McVay with his multi-formation, multi-movement, elusive offense could take advantage of the Seahawks defense to win this game.

New Orleans Saints -9 v. San Francisco 49ers
I know that the NFL changes week-to-week, and not to read too much into any given game or week, but last week's thrashings (by New Orleans of Tampa Bay and of San Francisco by Green Bay) are incredibly hard to ignore.  Michael Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders being back is huge for the Saints.

Baltimore Ravens -7 at New England Patriots
The number 1 rushing offense in the NFL at just over 170 yards per game, against a New England defense that is 25th in the NFL in rushing defense.  Plus, New England is on a short week.

Chicago Bears +3 v. Minnesota Vikings
Yes, I know this looks like a homer pick, but it really isn't.  It is just the law of averages.  Dalvin Cook cannot have games like the last two weeks, and he has to come back to earth at some point, why not on Monday night?

Bye Week - Atlanta Falcons, Dallas Cowboys, Kansas City Chiefs, New York Jets

Big Bet

Cleveland Browns -3 1/2 v. Houston Texans
Nick Chubb is activated just in time to face the NFL's worst run defense.  I expect Chubb to make up for lost time.
Houston's defense is just not very good, and the offense is lackluster.  I wonder if DeShaun Watson wishes he had DeAndre Hopkins back?  Yes, that was rhetorical.  My other thoughs were New Orleans Saints and Pittsburgh Steelers.

Picks of the Week

What a great week last week.  Perhaps after 13 weeks I finally learned something.  Of course, after bragging about it here, I am going to get demolished this week.

For those that are new to this site, I will select every game against the spread.  I will be selecting one big bet at $250 per, whereas everything else will be $100.  Winners count as winners, whereas losses will be calculated including a 10% vig to make the math that much simpler.  On to the picks.

New York Jets +17 at Baltimore Ravens
That number just seemed big to me.  Moral of the story?  Home team on a short week.

Chicago Bears +4 1/2 at Green Bay Packers
These games always seem to be close, and should be more so now that Akiem Hicks is back for the Bears.

Carolina Panthers +6 v. Seattle Seahawks
i don't like this pick, but it is a west coast team travelling east and playing in the early matchup.  But, Russell Wilson has historically done phenomenal in these situations.  With a 6 point spread, Seattle can win, and Carolina still cover.

Cincinnati Bengals +10 v. New England Patriots
Cincinnati has been playing better with Andy Dalton back at the helm, and New England's offense has been going backward.  Patriots will likely still win, but by a touchdown.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers -5 1/2 at Detroit Lions
Jameis - for better or for worse - has been slinging it, and he is playing for his job (and contract), whether in Tampa or otherwise.

Denver Broncos +10 at Kansas City Chiefs
I cannot pull the trigger on giving up double digits in this intradivisional rivalry, especially since Denver's offense looks entirely different with Drew Lock.  They aren't great, and Lock still has a long way to go, but at least it looks like I am watching an NFL team.

Miami Dolphins +3 at New York Giants
Do I need to say one more time how hard this team has been playing under Flores?  And, as the year end approaches, lots of Dolphins are playing for their jobs.  Plus, Fitzpatrick gets to pick on a team that just cut one of their cornerbacks because of a twitter feud.  Kudos to Eli for the way he handled himself while benched, but he just doesn't have the firepower - even with Saquon Barkley.

Tennessee Titans -3 v. Houston Texans
I just feel that this Tennessee team is better than (1) the sum of its parts; and (2) we all think.  If this game was at Houston, I would probably pick the Texans.

Philadelphia Eagles -6 at Washington Racists
The Eagles now know they have a legitimate chance to take over the division lead, as the Cowboys host the Rams and the Eagles play the Giants in week 17.  This win could make next week's game against the Cowboys less important.

Cleveland Browns -3 at Arizona Cardinals
Cleveland's offense has looked more dangerous since Kareem Hunt arrived, without lessening the impact running of Nick Chubb.  This is just too much for Arizona.

Oakland Raiders -6 1/2 v. Jacksonville Jaguars
The Jaguars have given up.

Minnesota Vikings -2 1/2 at Los Angeles Chargers
Minnesota celebrates the return of Adam Thielen by defeating the Chargers.  But, I would be incredibly happy if the Chargers win this game outright.

Los Angeles Rams -1 1/2 at Dallas Cowboys
Dallas has not defeated a team over .500 this season.  The only reason they are still in the playoff hunt is because their division is weak, and because they also haven't lost to a team under .500 all year.

San Francisco 49ers -10 1/2 v. Atlanta Falcons
I really hope that we get the 49ers offense from last week.

Buffalo Bills +1 1/2 Pittsburgh Steelers
James Conner is back for Pittsburgh, but only will split carries with Jaylen Samuels and Bennie Snell.  This leaves me in a fantasy football dilemma, but not in a picks dilemma.  I will take any points Pittsburgh gives me.

New Orleans Saints -9 1/2 v. Indianapolis Colts
Indianapolis gave this season as good run for 10 or 11 weeks, but just ran out of steam.  If the Saints play anywhere near the level they played last week, they win this in a walk.

Big Bet I
Oakland Raiders -6 1/2 v. Jacksonville Jaguars
The Jaguars have given up.

In case you haven't seen it yet this week, or in previous weeks, the Jaguars have given up.

Big Bet II

Cleveland Browns -3 at Arizona Cardinals
Cleveland's offense has looked more dangerous since Kareem Hunt arrived, without lessening the impact running of Nick Chubb.  This is just too much for Arizona.

I am only picking a second big bet because I couldn't decide which of the two to choose, so I am picking both.  I would do I if I was actually limited to one because Oakland is at home.
