Picks of the Week

So, my expected backslide did, in fact, occur.  Actually, the pick's weren's so bad (8-8), but the dam big bet got me.  Without going back to look at it, I believe that is 3 big bet losses in a row.  I need to fix that for sure.  In this penultimate regular season week, let's fix that, OK!  Interesting football week this week as for most people it is the fantasy football championships.  I am not in those either, but my wife is!!!  Let's Go Gator Bait!!!

For those that are new to this site, I will select every game against the spread.  I will be selecting one big bet at $250 per, whereas everything else will be $100.  Winners count as winners, whereas, losses will be calculated including a 10% vig to make the math that much simpler.  On to the picks...

Tennessee Titans +14 v. Dallas Cowboys
Took a lot of flak for this pick with everybody and their brother not playing for Tennessee - and Josh Dobbs playing - but it turns out ot be a push.  Home team on a short week, ya'll.

Detroit Lions +5 1/2 v. Chicago Bears
Too many people out for the Bears, like offensive lineman and Jack Sanborn.  The good news - the number 1 pick is in play!!!  (And then a trade back to the Colts for the fifth pick, 2 other firsts, a second, and a switch of fifths.  While still landing Will Anderson!

Philadelphia Eagles -5 v. New Orleans Saints
Gardner Minshew can put points up on the board.  New Orleans will give him some trouble as they are 2nd in passing defense, but, the offense just isn't putting up enough points this year (22nd in the league.)

Carolina Panthers +3 1/2 at Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Carolina has won 3 of its last 4 games.  Could it be that we all dramatically underestimated Sam Darnold?  I don't think so, but Tampa hasn't exactly been world beaters either, so I will take the points and assume this will be a close game.

Denver Broncos +12 1/2 at Kansas City Chiefs
Wholesale changes after a Christmas Day ass-whooping have to account for being able to cover a double-digit spread against a division-rival, right?

New York Giants -5 1/2 v. Indianapolis Colts
I have not been sold on the Giants all year, but Indianapolis is playing on a short week this week, and look rudderless last week anyway.  Probably a good opponent for a team fighting for the playoffs.

Jacksonville Jaguars -3 1/2 at Houston Texans
Jacksonville is riding a three-game winning streak, all against playoff-competitive teams, and although I don't usually like giving points to a divisional rival at home, Houston's offense is putrid (26th in passing; 30th in rushing; 30th in scoring; 32nd - last - in total offense.)

Arizona Cardinals +6 1/2 at Atlanta Falcons
David Blough versus Desmond Ridder - a stunning QB battle.  But, the last time we questioned David Blough, he threw the ball around the field.  And, in a game with likely little scoring, I will take the points.  Plus, the one thing the Falcons do well offensively is run the ball, but Arizona is a competent 12th against the run, so the score should stay close.

Cleveland Browns +2 at Washington Commanders
Deep in my heart, I feel that Carson Wentz will give the Commanders the same type of jolt as Taylor Heniecke first gave them when he started.  However, teams are 1-14 this year in the week after playing the San Francisco 49ers, and guess who Washington played last week?

New England Patriots -3 v. Miami Dolphins
The starting carousel is swinging at full speed for the Miami Dolphins, and I am not just talking about quarterback.  Key players at basically every position will be out today.

New York Jets -2 at Seattle Seahawks
It appears that Seattle is spent, having lost 3 in a row and 5 of their last 6.

San Francisco 49ers -9 1/2 at Las Vegas Raiders
This is a HUGE line on the road, but with the craziness going on in the Raiders with the benching of Derek Carr in favor of Jarret Stidham, who although has some athleticism and talent, will be making his first start against the number total defense, scoring defense and rushing defense in the NFL!!!

Los Angeles Rams +6 1/2 at Los Angeles Chargers
I have said this before, but the Chargers are a different team when they have Mike Williams and Keenan Allen on the field, and that is all for the better.  But, they are on a short week, so I am taking the points, hoping last week's 51-point burst rejuvenated the Rams enough to keep this close.

Green Bay Packers -3 v. Minnesota Vikings
The Vikings will likely know whether Philly won or lost before they take the field today (and assuming a San Fran win already), so they will need this game to stay in the hunt for the one (or 2) seed in the NFC.  Problem is, this game is in the 4 p.m. Eastern slot, so the Noon Nightmare cannot emerge.  Plus, this Packers team is looking like Rodgers will lead them to a first round exit from the playoffs.

Pittsburgh Steelers +2 at Baltimore Ravens
This game should be really close, especially given the 16-14 Baltimore win just 3 weeks ago.  In the last 4 weeks the Ravens have scored 17, 3, 16 and 10 points.  Any extra points - like the plus 2 in the spread - is welcome in this game.

Cincinnati Bengals +1 1/2 v. Buffalo Bills
Cincinnati is only one-game behind the Bills in the race for the one-seed in the AFC.  And Buffalo, despite winning, has not seemed dominant.  Even the Bears stayed with them for 3+ quarters last week.  I hate to pay hunches, but the fact that the teams are pretty evenly matched (2nd and 5th offenses, 7th and 10th defenses); means I have to choose somehow.

Big Bet:

New York Giants -5 1/2 v. Indianapolis Colts
I have not been sold on the Giants all year, but Indianapolis is playing on a short week this week, and look rudderless last week anyway.  Probably a good opponent for a team fighting for the playoffs.
Nick Foles' lack of mobility will cause at least one really bad turnover which helps the Giants cover the spread because of a short field.  But really, the Colts rushing defense is 20th in the NFL, and the Giants behind Saquon Barkley are 6th in rushing, so that should get it done.

Last Week's Record:  8-8
Last Week's Big Bet:  0-1
Year-to-Date Record:  122-109-7

Picks of the Week

A winning week last week, brings me back into the black for the season.  As we head down the stretch in the final quarter of the season, time to capitalize on everything we have learned about the teams this year to date.

My long time readers know how this works, but for everybody else,  a reminder.  Each pick is using the spread (straight up is for wussies), and the betting line is from the same website each week as of the time of typing the entry. I keep a running tally of my record, plus my winnings/losses. We will "pretend" that I bet $100 on each game, with one game each week going for $250. Winnings/Losses will be calculated including a 10% vig to make the math that much simpler.  On to the picks.

Tennessee Titans -5 v. Jacksonville Jaguars
Once again, taking the home team on a short week pays off, but this time with the added bonus of doing it against a Jacksonville team "led" by Cody Kessler.

Buffalo Bills -4 1/2 v. New York Jets
Buffalo has basically been playing with Josh Allen behind center, even if he is doing it with his legs much more than his arm.  The Jets and their rookie quarterback have yet to jell this season.

Carolina Panthers -1 at Cleveland Browns
I really wanted to take Cleveland here, but Carolina really needs this win to get back in the playoff hunt, and to end their four-game losing streak.

Green Bay Packers -3 1/2 v. Atlanta Falcons
To be fair, nobody has any idea how the Packers are going to react to the firing of head coach Mike McCarthy and Assistant Head Coach/Defensive Coordinator Winston Moss after last week's loss.  So, my guess is that Aaron Rodgers tries to validate the firing with a huge game.

Indianapolis Colts +4 at Houston Texans
Can the Texans win their 10th game in a row?  Of course they can, and I suspect they will.  But, Indianapolis is going to make this tough for them and will score quite a bit of points themselves.  Maybe a repeat of week 4's 37-34 Texans win will cover the spread.  Of course, if the Colts break the winning streak then they will win this beat too, so I am going Colts.

Baltimore Ravens -6 1/2 at Kansas City Chiefs
The Ravens defense is first overall in total defense and points allowed, second in passing defense and third in rushing defense.  I am not saying they will stop the Chiefs, but they will make it harder for them to score.  Plus, with the newly found rushing attack behind rookies Gus Edwards and Lamar Jackson, the Ravens will try to control the clock.

Miami Dolphins +9 v. New England Patriots
For some reason, the Dolphins always have a trick or two for the Patriots when they come to Miami.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers +10 v. New Orleans Saints
New Orleans keeps cruising, but the intra-divisional rival Tampa Bay makes it tough for the Saints.  Do not expect a repeat of the week 1 Bucs victory, especially with Ryan Fitzpatrick on the bench.

New York Giants -3 at Washington Racists
I feel like their is an opportunity for me or my friends to play quarterback for Washington this year.  Marcus, are you available if they need you?

Los Angeles Chargers  -15 v. Cincinnati Bengals
This is a ridiculous line, and nobody in their right mind would ever select any NFL giving 15 points ... unless they were playing against Jeff Driskel.  Can somebody say collusion?

Denver Broncos -3 at San Francisco 49ers
I hate taking road favorites, but I have to do so here.  The 49ers are going nowhere fast, and Denver, believe it or not, has an opportunity to still make the playoffs.

Detroit Lions -3 at Arizona Cardinals
Detroit is not good, but I feel that they at least give themselves opportunities to win.  Despite being the proverbial straw that broke Mike McCarthy's back, Arizona has not shown us much of anything this year.  I'll take Detroit.

Dallas Cowboys -3 v. Philadelphia Eagles
Both of these teams would love to knock the other one down a peg.  A win by Philadelphia puts them in a tie for first in the NFC East.  A win by Dallas virtually assures Philadelphia of missing the playoffs.  Plus, Dallas has been a completely different team since the acquisition of Amari Cooper.  Philadelphia is not the same team as last year's Super Bowl winners.

Pittsburgh Steelers -10 at Oakland Raiders
Is it possible that Roethlisberger throws for 500 yards?  I think so.  In the past 5 years, double digit favorites have covered almost 60% of the time, so I will take a chance on the Steelers (as well as the Chargers).

Chicago Bears +3 v. Los Angeles Rams
Just a gut feeling. Not saying the Bears win, but this game is shaping up to be very interesting.  We all know about the Rams offense (2nd in points, 2nd overall, 4th in rushing and passing), but the Rams defense has been markedly pedestrian, (17th in passing defense, 18th in rushing defense and total defense, and 19th in points allowed).  They will give up yards and points to Chicago.  Chicago is 5th in points scored and 5th in points allowed.  They are second in rush defense, so Todd Gurley might find yards tough to come by in Soldier Field.

Seattle Seahawks -3 v. Minnesota Vikings
An incredibly important NFC battle for both squads trying to jockey for widcard position.  For those who have not been paying attention, Russell Wilson has been playing out-of-his-mind!!!!  I'll take Russell Wilson.

Big Bet
New York Giants -3 at Washington Racists
I feel like their is an opportunity for me or my friends to play quarterback for Washington this year.  Marcus, are you available if they need you?
Saquon Barkley is coming into his own, so even though the Giants are on the road and giving up points, that shouldn't be a problem against..... who is it again?  Oh yeah ... Mark Sanchez.

NFL Wrap-Up

Here are my thoughts from Week 3 of the NFL season, based purely on what I was able to see.  I finally was able to secure a spot at a local watering hole with lots of friends and lots more football fans, so I was able to take in portions of almost every game!

Game of the Week

Miami Dolphins 38 v. Oakland Raiders 14 (in London).  Only because the NFL requires me to make this the Game of the Week due to its being played in London.  Just kidding, the NFL lets us all do what we want to do.  Right?

San Francisco 49ers 26 v. Philadelphia Eagles 21.  Two playoff-looking teams in a dogfight, with San Francisco just needing (and wanting) it a bit more.  San Francisco held the vaunted Eagles offense scoreless in the second half, to come back from a 21-13 deficit to win the game.  I don't think San Francisco is as good as they have been the past two years, but if they can survive until Game 10 (when Aldon Smith returns) they could make some waves late in the season.

Best Team Performance

New York Giants.  In a game between two teams that looked like the had finally turned the corner coming in, the Giants absolutely annihilated the Washington Whatever their Name is Eventually Going to Be.  Eli Manning looked, dare I say, "Elite" in carving up Washington's secondary, and Rashad Jennings and Andre Williams both had their way with the defense as well.

Least Impressive Team Performance

Tennessee Titans.  Normally there would be nothing wrong with losing a game on the road to the Indianapolis Colts, but the Titans looked like they didn't even show up.  Perhaps it was because they had to play the entire game with Charlie Whitehurst at quarterback, but having Whitehurst lead the team in rushing also evidenced just how unimpressive this performance was by Tennessee.

Most Impressive Individual Performance (Offense)

Phillip Rivers, QB - San Diego Chargers- Another total annihilation of the Jaguars, in large part because Rivers went 29-39 for 377 with 3 TDs.  Yes the Jaguars are horrible, but Rivers did exactly what you are supposed to do to bad teams.  Honorable mention to Demarco Murray of the Cowboys.

Most Impressive Individual Performance (Defense)
Husain Abdullah, FS - Kansas City Chiefs. He did some of everything on the defensive side of the ball for the Chiefs in their defeat of the New England Patriots.  He had 8 tackles, 3 passes defensed, a QB hit and the interception that he returned for a touchdown.

Most Impressive Individual Performance (Special Teams)

Dustin Colquitt, P - Kansas City Chiefs.  Once again, his booming punts kept filed position in the Chiefs' favor all game.  Averaged 45 yards a punt, only two of which were returned - for a total of 10 yards.

Most Impressive Team Performance (Premier League)

Chelsea.  Defeated Aston Villa 3-0 to maintain their place at the top of the Premier League Table with 5 wins and a draw in 6 matches.  In addition, Chelsea managed to get 3 goals passed Brad Guzan, the goalie that most experts believe had been playing the best to start the season.

Most Impressive Individual Performance (Premier League)

Edin Dzeko - Manchester.  Dzeko scored a brace against Hull City, the second being the go-ahead goal as City defeated Hull 4-2.

Goat of the Week

Brad Wing, P - Pittsburgh Steelers - After the Steelers were unable to gain a game-winning first down after getting the ball back up 4 with 1:44 remaining in the game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Brad Wing shanked a 29 yard punt giving the Buccaneers the ball at Pittsburgh's 46 with 40 seconds left, which Tampa used to score the game-winning touchdown.

Goat of the Week (Premier League)

Wayne Rooney, Manchester United - After scoring an opening goal, Rooney proceeded to earn a straight red card, which also results in him missing this weekend's clash at home against Everton.

Hit of the Week

Jason Garrett, Coach - Dallas Cowboys - For his hits on Cowboy Wide Receiver Terrence Williams after Williams caught his second TD pass of the game.

Breakthrough Performance

Travis Kelce, TE - Kansas City Chiefs. After showing promise earlier in the year, Kelce broke out with an 8 catch 93 yard performance that included a touchdown.  Much more important than just the stat line was that Kelce looked like the type of tight end that could be a primary receiver, catching the ball, creating mismatches, running after the catch and making people miss.

Finally

Jacksonville Jaguars - They lost, and badly, but they finally gave the start to rookie Blake Bortles, who looks to have the skills and demeanor to be a real quality quarterback in the NFL.

Impact Injury

DeAngelo Williams, RB - Carolina Panthers.  To a team that relies primarily on running the ball and its defense, this injury really hurts, especially when added to the list of other injured running backs, Jonathan Stewart, Mike Tolbert and Fozzy Whittaker.

Team Rising

New York Giants - Perhaps the problem with the Giants was not that they were terrible, it may just have taken time to get used to the new offensive coordinator and his system, but boy have they ever.  They host the Falcons, and are at divisional rivals the Eagles and Cowboys before the bye week, so we will learn a lot about the Giants in October.

Team Falling

New England Patriots - Every sports talk show was asking if the Belichick-Brady dynasty is over.

Best Teams
(All undefeated teams will be top ranked teams until none are left - then the rankings will be the result of my true thoughts and not just records).

1. Cincinnati Bengals
2. Arizona Cardinals
3. Seattle Seahawks
4. Philadelphia Eagles
5. San Diego Chargers

Worst Teams
(All winless teams will be bottomed ranked teams until none are left - then the rankings will be the result of my true thoughts and not just records)

32. Jacksonville Jaguars
31. Oakland Raiders
30. Tennessee Titans
29. Cleveland Browns
28. Washington Whatever their New Name is Going to Be

Middle Teams

15.  Kansas City Chiefs
16.  Green Bay Packers
17.  New York Giants
18.  Chicago Bears

Preview - Game(s) of the Week

Bonus Game (since last week most of the match up sucked, this week, we have ore interesting games) - Arizona Cardinals and Denver Broncos.  The undefeated Cardinals bring their stellar defense on the road against the Broncos' vaunted offense.  If Arizona can win this game, they will definitely make a statement to the rest of the league.

4.  Kansas City Chiefs v. San Francisco 49ers - If we get both teams that played last week, this will be an exciting and very tough game to watch.

3. Atlanta Falcons v. New York Giants - Assuming that the Giants' offense has in fact gelled together, this could be the best offensive scoring game we have seen in a long, long time.

2.  Houston Texans v. Dallas Cowboys - The battle for Texas is also the battle to go 4-1!

1. Baltimore Ravens v. Indianapolis Colts - The Colts continue their tough opening schedule after their brief respite against the Titans last week.  The Ravens have looked downright dominating at times.

Trivia

When was the last time that the NFL actually had interesting games or teams in London?

Sports Bar Review of the Week

As stated earlier, I was at a Sports Bar this Sunday, so that is the bar that gets the review.

Duffy's Sports Grill, 225 Clematis Street, West Palm Beach, FL

I must confess that I have been to this place too many times to count, as well as many other locations within this growing Florida chain.  Generally, I like Duffy's, but this review is strictly about this past visit at this one location, and not about my normal overall thoughts and other locations.

The place was packed, but not overly so, a little bit surprising considering that the Dolphins (local team), Bills (huge local following), Bears-Packers (big rivalry) and other games were on.  Our waitress was named Jessie, and she came immediately upon us sitting at the table and ordered our drinks..

This is a generic sports bar, in that its menu is exactly what you would expect; wings, burgers, salads, entrees, appetizers.  But what makes this place great is it is on a very busy downtown corner, with sight-lines down both streets to see the activities, and lots of televisions facing in every direction.  From practically any seat you can have a great view of 4 different televisions, and you can see more, just not as direct.  Lots of planning is done prior to Sunday to make sure all of the games are accurately spaced-out so that each patron can view many different games should they choose to do so.

The food is what I would consider very good bar food.  Normally I would get the wings, but for some reason I wanted to try something different, off the "football menu" - the buffalo chicken sliders.  However, the name is a bit of a misnomer, as this was not mini-buffalo chicken sandwiches.  This was chicken meatballs, stuffed with blue cheese (which was piping hot and delicious), and then shaken in a wing sauce of your choice.  My choice was the spicy garlic, which is outstanding.  We also had an order of chicken nachos, which are good, but exactly what you would expect.

In addition to the standard food fair, Duffy's has pretty standard beer selection, with some craft beers being present on the menu as well, but nothing outside of the ordinary.  After realizing I had settled down for some long football watching, I had boring Bud Light, while others in our group had Stella Artois.  Duffy's does also have a full bar, which some in our group may - or may not - have taken advantage of.

A pretty good time (except for the outcome of the football game I was watching) until the end.  Jessie was great and pre-delivered separate checks to our party.  She knew because she had waited on several of us on a number of occasions previously.  All the tabs were paid, except for one guy who simply questioned the amount of beers placed on his tab.  He was charged for 5 beers, which does not seem like a big deal so I will break it down for you.  Duffy's has 2-for-1s, so that meant he had 10 if he was charged for 5.  Again, not so bad for watching an entire set of early games, except for the fact that Duffy's also has large beers, which is what was ordered at our table.  So that means he actually had 20 regular beers.  This is over the course of just over 3 hours.  So basically he was finishing a beer every 10 minutes.  Mathematically this does not make sense for someone at a restaurant (at a party, at home, the beach, at the tailgate, maybe, but not in the restaurant).  When he questioned his tab, Jessie rightfully summoned the manager over, who was entirely and completely argumentative from the start.  He said those were the beers that were ordered, and we were going to pay for them or he was going to have security escort us out to the cops.  (Downtown West Palm Beach has a private security company that patrols the area - paid for by the City).  Now, the bill was not that high, the cost was not the issue, we were just questioning the number on that one particular tab.  The manager said that it had to be correct because nobody else was drinking Bud Light.  Now I know that was not true because I was, and so was the guy sitting next to me.  So basically, what was a simple question about the potential for extra drinks being on a bill - which has happened to me before at this establishment so I believe it to be a possibility in this case - turned into a tremendous overreaction from the manager and about 12 people who no longer want to go to this establishment.

Too bad the manager didn't know that I write this review section up weekly.  Let's just hope that the readership of this blog rises enough to make a difference.

I want to be clear, I have no problems with our waitress Jessie.  Perhaps she made a mistake in ringing up beers, perhaps not.  Perhaps one of  my beers ended up on my friend's tab - in which case I would have paid it no problem.  Who knows?  But, she was a good waitress, and when the issue presented itself she went to the manager.

He, however, was nothing but argumentative and never wanted to even listen to us speak - much less listen to my mathematical breakdown as detailed above.  At least ACT like you are listening to your customer.

Trivia Answer

In the game against the Eagles, Pierre Garcon had 138 receiving yards and DeSean Jackson had 117 receiving yards.  The last time the Redskins had two receiver over 100 yards in the same game was 2003.  The receivers were LAVERANUES COLES (180 yards) and ROD GARDNER (118 yards) on September 13, 2013 against Atlanta.

A Historical Look At The New York Giants

One of my favorite things to do from time to time is to take a look back at some of the rosters of past teams, once we have a chance to reflect on the careers of some of the players on those teams. For a prime example of this, look back at the rosters of the early 2000s Miami Hurricane teams. Just absolutely loaded.

However, in honor of the the Super Bowl, this entry is going to look back at the 1990 New York Giants football team. This is the team that went on to win Super Bowl XXV in Tampa, Florida, which admittedly is my favorite Super Bowl of all time. Some of the many reasons for this are: (1) I attended; (2) the Whitney Houston national anthem sung at the height of the first Gulf War; (3) the NFL announced its Silver Anniversay All-Super Bowl Team; (4) Thurman Thomas at the absolutely height of his career, and the only reason he did not win MVP was because of; (5) local legend Ottis Andersen winning MVP; (6) Giants with a 2:1 time of possession advantage; (7) Scott Norwood's miss; and (8) (did I mention that) I was at the game.

Well, anyway, this entry isn't a typical look back at the roster of a championship team. I want to highlight a particular portion of the team roster - the coaching staff. As most people know, Bill Parcells was the head coach, and as many of us have heard recently Bill Belichick (Defensive Coordinator) and Tom Coughlin (Wide Receivers) were both on that staff. That in and of itself is a ton of coaching talent. But that wasn't it. The remaing coaches were:

Ron Erhardt - Offensive Coordinator
Ray Handley - Running Backs
Mike Pope - Tight Ends
Fred Hoaglin - Offensive Line
Romeo Crennel - Defensive Line
Al Groh - Linebackers
Mike Sweatman - Special Teams Coordinator
Charlie Weis - Assistant Special Teams

The list of coaches that either had head coaching experience at the NFL or major college level, or became head coaches at that same level are: Parcells, Erhardt, Handley, Belichick, Crennel, Groh and Weis. Just absolutely amazing.

Seeing how that coaching staff turned out, it is amazing that Giants only won by a missed 47 yard field goal instead of absolutely routing the Buffalo Bills that year.

It remains to be seen if either of these two staffs in tomorrow's Super Bowl will ultimately measure up to the success of that 1990 New York Giants coaching staff. Only time will tell.
