NCAA TOURNAMENT POOL STANDINGS

Round 1 

First off, my apologies for no post yesterday.  I did do the scores, but then St. Patrick's Day happened.  I hope that everyone understands.  This update is complete through all of  round 1.  

We have 109 official entries in the pool.  The standings only contain 108, as I entrant has sent her entry via mail and I have not yet received it.  So long as it is postmarked correctly, she will be included in the first update after I can score her bracket.

We had 6 unanimous picks in the first round, and all advanced:  Villanova, North Caronlina, Gonzaga, Arizona, Kentucky and Duke.  That is right, that means Kansas was not a unanimous selection.  Samantha Sheehan selected UC Davis.  (To be fair, so did her mother, Traci Sheehan.)  We will give her a little credit for being risky, as she is only 15 months old.  This was an especially  gusty pick as only one 16 seed has ever defeated a 1 seed in NCAA Tournament History.  Who knows which team pulled of that feat?

We have fourteen different champions selected, and 13 survived the first round.  The unlucky selectors - Steven Usma 2 and Jessica Koch - of the University of Miami must be hating this tournament, but made the same mistake we all make every year, underestimating Michigan State and Coach Tom Izzo.  The champions from our group (remaining teams in bold:  Arizona, Duke, Florida, Florida State, Gonzaga, Kansas, Kentucky, Miami, Notre Dame, North Carolina, Oregon, UCLA, Villanova, Wisconsin.  This list will remain the same throughout all of the updates, but I will remove the “bold” from teams as they lose.

I looked through last year's first round commentary, and interestingly enough nobody picked Middle Tennessee State to defeat Michigan State last year, but lots of entrants had them to defeat Minnesota this year.  Even though MTSU was a 12 seed, they were actually the betting favorite being favored by 2 in Vegas.  MTSU was one of four teams that earned bonus points for upsets in the first round, two each day:  Middle Tennessee State, Xavier, USC and Rhode Island.  Two entrants had all four upsets selected correctly, including Adam Jorgensen 2, who scored the maximum of 31 points on Thursday.  His Friday was good, but not enough to keep him in the lead as Jonathan Wasserman followed up a solid day Thursday (25 points) with 30 on Friday.  (Interestingly enough, Adam and Jonathan play on the same softball team.) [Ed. Note - Their team is not that good.] Given his perfect Thursday, Adam wins the "Picks of the Day(s)" Award.

I was all set to chastise Alex King for selecting Rhode Island, since I know he only picked them because his son attends the school, but enough of the entrants selected Rhode Island for this not to have been a fluke, so he gets a pass this time.

Other than Miami, the other worst loss was for Glen Merchant, as he had Vermont going to the FInal Four.He was close as  Vermont did in fact end up in the Final Sixty-Four.  

Some interesting games today, as Villanova-Wisconsin (which is on currently) involves two potential champions.  Middle Tennessee State seeks to make the Sweet Sixteen against Butler and Northwestern, in its first ever NCAA Tournament, looks to win its second round game to advance.  

As always, please review the standings and double check my math, as I may have missed something, missed an upset, or just simply miscalculated.  I try to be accurate, but sometimes I do mess up.  I will listen and change things as necessary.  If you point out a potential mistake, I will not take offense, but I will go re-score your entire bracket to make sure everything is accurate.

Final Standings

I am sure that you are tired of waiting for the standings, so I will make my synopsis quick.  Congratulations to Villanova Wildcats on winning the 2016 NCAA Basketball Tournament.  And congratulations go Glen Merchant, Hilary Kroesen and Day Yi for selecting the Wildcats.  Unfortunately for Hilary and Day, the rest of their bracket did not stand up well to the competition, so they did not win, place or show in the pool.

The winners of the pool, in order, are Glen Merchant, Greg Kummerlen, and Jonathan Wasserman.  The fact that Greg came in second has absolutely nothing to do with the free tab I received while watching the Elite 8 games at his sports bar (since there was no free tab, hint, hint!)

We have an unprecedented occurrence in the race for last place.  There was a tie between Phil Doherty 2 and Phil Doherty 4.  Since both entries are for the same person, I will not break the tie, but just give last place money back to Phil Doherty.

Elite 8 Day 2

The Elite 8 is complete, and Syracuse is the surprise of the ball.  Most people did not think that Syracuse should have even been in the tournament, and now they are one of four teams left, which includes the top seeded North Carolina Tar Heels.  See you in Houston Tar Heel and Orange fans (excepting Donald Trump).

North Carolina was an overwhelming selection to make it to the Final Four, so if you did not pick the Tar Heels, you lost ground in the pool.  Nobody had Syracuse in the Final Four, so everybody that selected North Carolina wins the “Pick of the Day” award.

The “Worst Pick of the Day” goes to Keith Bornhorst, who had North Carolina into the Elite 8, and then did not select a Final Four winner from that quadrant.

Greg Kummerlen and Glen Merchant remain in the lead, but Greg has maxxed out his points, as he has no remaining points to earn.  In fact, a large number of entrants have reached the highest amount of points that they can.  In the standings below, I have noted who has winners/runners-up remaining.  For possible winners of the pool, you will receive 10 points for a correct semi-final selection, and 12 points for having the Finals correctly.

Our pool has 3 remaining champions, as all but Syracuse have been selected by various entrants.  For the many of you that had Virginia, you join the rest of us. The remaining champions in the pool are:  Duke, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Miami, Michigan State, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Villanova and Virginia. 

Since I will be at the Final Four, I will not be updating the pool after Saturday’s games, or immediately after Monday’s final.  Instead, I will be live blogging with my cohorts from Houston, so look for those entries.

Elite 8 Day 1

The Elite 8 has begun, and both number 1 seeds fell.  Kansas – the overall number 1 seed, the betting favorite, and the most selected champion in our pool, lost to Villanova, and Oregon, the most suspect number 1 seed, lost to Buddy Hield and the Oklahoma Sooners.  See you in Houston Wildcat and Sooner fans.

Kansas and Oklahoma were by far the most popular selections in our group for yesterday’s games, so if you did not at least select 1 game correctly, then you lost ground.  Congratulations to Steve Usma 3, Hilary Kroesen, Katie Kollmeyer, Mac Kroesen and Day Yi 2, for offsetting their choices of teams other than Oklahoma by winning their one game by correctly choosing Villanova for the Final Four.  This is not enough for the “Pick of the Day” award.

That award is shared jointly by Glen Merchant, Justin Yung, Josh and Katie Zdrowak (combined entry), and Amy Zdrowak who correctly selected both Villanova and Oklahoma as advancing to the Final Four.  Those picks, and the 16 points that go along with it, move you up in the standings considerably.

Some movement around the top, but no change to the leader as Greg Kummerlen remains in first.  This is not likely to last, however, as Greg has lost both of his finalists, and his only remaining points possible is by getting North Carolina into the Final Four.  So, if you are behind Greg and still have your winner and/or runner-up, you are still alive!  This is especially true for Glen Merchant, who has risen into a tie for first place.  He still has his entire final four alive!

It is now official that we will have a new champion.  Kingfish Parham, our defending champion, hovered near the top for a while this year, but has slipped in the standings recently, making it incredibly difficult to repeat.  However, as of yesterday, Kingfish can officially no longer earn any more points.  He has been dethroned, but let’s give Kingfish a big round of applause.

 

Two more potential champions, including the favorite, have been defeated, leaving our pool with 4 remaining champions.  For those of you that selected the favorite, Kansas, or took a flyer on Oregon, your chances took a tremendous hit. The remaining champions in the pool are:  Duke, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Miami, Michigan State, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Villanova and Virginia. 

We have an All-ACC day today, as North Carolina plays Notre Dame and Virginia takes on Syracuse.  Crazy, but yes Notre Dame and Syracuse are in the ACC.  Who knew?

For those of you that have North Carolina and Virginia as your champions/runners-up, the games today are of tremendous importance.  Nobody has Syracuse advancing into the Final Four, but we do have someone with Notre Dame.  Could that person know more than the rest of us?  We shall see.
