Final Four Chronicles: THE SEMI-FINALS

A super unexpected night of games (not the outcomes, necessarily, but the WAY things played out.  Wow.  But we will get to that in due course.  First, we have to start from the beginning, especially given the absolutely EPIC brunch we had.  Here is day 2!!!

08:30 - We are all now up, and just hanging out on the connected front porches, with coffee (for most).

08:42 - We already notice that there are A LOT of dogs in this neighborhood.  Pretty good sign we are in a nice place.

09:01 - A lady is out on her porch just yelling.  We don't know if she is yelling at someone inside the house, or at the side of the house, or at her dog in her front yard.  She is just yelling.  Sinickal states, "Please tell me that she is white." She was.

09:13 - All catching up on some recent political/military news, especially discussing the downed pilot.  Kev-O asks if we saw that Secretary Hegseth lifted the ban on having weapons on military bases.  Pepster says that at least it would make a good country song.  Seeing the other three are perplexed, he continues, you know, Try That in a Small Military Base!

09:22 - Guy stops his car in the middle of the road right in front of our house.  he sits for a bit so that we assume he is an Uber or Lyft driver.  He is not.  He is just trying to figure out how to engage the auto-parallel park feature on his Tesla.  The space could fit a bus or two!!!  Kev-O yells out, "Be a man."

10:40 - Off to brunch.

10:52 - Park outside our brunch location.  There is a big sign that says "Welcome to the Big Dance" with a basketball next to it just sitting on the adjacent corner.  People are taking pictures in front of it.  Sinickal looks, turns to Pepster and says, "brunch right next to a dance studio, nice!"  Pepster had to admit that he actually made the same mistake when he first saw the sign.  We assume it was because of the pair of thighs obscuring part of the sign when we arrived.

10:58 - Enter The Fountain Room.  As we await the hostess who is gathering menus and the like, we notice this little decoration, that was actually the active sound system playing music throughout the restaurant.  We already think this is going to be a cool place.

Kev-O notices other parts of the stereo system just sitting as decorations around the restaurant and remarks that we are listening to about $20K worth of equipment.

11:00 - Ithiyia is our server.  She asks us who we are rooting for in the Final Four.  Sinickal says, a Bloody Mary.  Right now I am cheering for your cocktail list.  Ithiyia says, "Good choice.  I think it is going all the way this year."

11:12 - Maybe a weird thing to notice, but the drapes in this place are amazing.

11:14 - As we are remarking about the drapes, we notice a guy outside of his car on the street trying to figure out how to close his trunk.  It took him about four tries to realize that something was covering the sensor.

11:15 - Ithiyia - in continuing the sports metaphors - noted that she hit for the cycle, as all four of us ordered the steak and eggs.

11:17 - The skillet cinnamon buns as a brunch appetizer were amazing!

11:18 - Who is Pam?

11:20 - Sinickal receives this message from long-time friend and supporter of Southwestern Central, "I am reading the Final Four Chronicles from an Irish Pub in Budapest."  The fact that we posted about Viktor Orban in yesterday's chronicle is not lost on us!

11:24 - Kev-O, who in fact does NOT love Southwestern Central, is launching his own school.  In explaining the name, location, meaning, importance, and symbolism of his school - which includes an important Supreme Court decision from 1811 - Pepster makes a historical reference in a joke about Supreme Court decisions made around that time.  Sinickal notes, "I love that Kev-O has given Pepster the opportunity to make Supreme Court humor.

11:37 - What a great skirt steak!!!!

11:50 - We notice a woman sitting by herself at a nearby table as a cupcake with candle in it is delivered. We ask if we can sing happy birthday to her and Ithivia asks "Can you sing?" We sing happy birthday anyway.

11:55 - A way too animated discussion about chimichurri sauce.

11:57 - Somehow transitioned our discussion from chimichurri to Costco.  Pepster hates Costco.  Not the store, or its products, but the parking lots, and the crazy people that are always at Costco.  Sinickal says, "In Pepster's words, all of these things are self-evident!"

12:03 - Discussion of sundials.

12:04 - 6:30 is a sundown town in Northern Virginia for Kev-O.

12:10 - We are talking about Julius Caesar (because of the calendar change), which leads to a comment about the fact that the first known autopsy was performed on Julius Caeser.  Not necessarily important in and of itself, but ...

12:11 - Katie the Manager stops by to talk to us about the brunch drink menu and to apologize to us because, apparently, we had an old one, and Sinickal had ordered a drink that they can no longer prepare.  Sinickal asks her if she wanted to go back into the kitchen and come back with a steak knife to stab him in the back.  Tony says that we were just talking about Julius Caesar.  Katie's response, "Et tu, Brute?"

12:12 - This latest round of drinks came courtesy of the weather.  It is pouring outside.  Can't walk to the car now.

12:22 - We now notice that Katie the Manager is putting in work, a very hands-on manager.  She is all over this restaurant.  In fact, she just went into the back walk-in cooler to get something for one of the other employees.

12:33 - Discussing hollers.  Sinickal has to explain to Tony what a holler is.  Kev-O notes that Sinickal is literally translating from Hillbilly to Northeast Italian, like some weird Rosetta Stone.

12:50 - Ithiyia arrives with another round of drinks.  She walks up right as Sinickal is saying, "That is why she is really annoying."  Ithiyia says, "I didn't think I was THAT bad!"  [Ed. Note - He was not talking about Ithiyia.]

13:18 - Leave Fountain Room.

13:19 - Reminiscing about the olden days, or as Sinickal called it, "The sweatshirt over the ass AIDS phase!"

13:26 - Stop into a convenience store to buy beer.  Whoops.  Can't do that in Indiana.

13:26:30 - The convenience store worker says, "Good ole Indiana," then directs us to the liquor store 3 blocks away.

13:29 - Enter liquor store.

13:31 - Couple that entered the convenience store after us just entered the liquor store.  We all notice each other and know that the exact same thing just occurred to them that happened to us.

13:52 - Back home.  Kev-O opens up his Grippo's BBQ chips.  These are REALLY good.  Apparently, it is the one thing that Cincinnati is known for.

15:00 - We were going to head downtown, but How I Met Your Mother is on, and it is the Robin Doesn't Go to the Mall/Slap Bet episode.  We are here for another 30 minutes.

15:42 - Uber arrives and we are on our way to Whistle Stop, the closest bar to Lucas Oil Stadium.  We need to be close because it is still raining.

15:52 - There is a line outside of Whistle Stop.  Not that long a line - especially when compared to the other bars near us - and we can stand under an awning.

16:00 - See a group of four guys wearing an orange t-shirt that says "Illinoisivic".

16:19 - As we are standing in the bar talking, Pepster and Kev-O start talking a little baseball.  Guy in Illinois gear, who looks way too much like Dr. Hodgins on Bones, says to us, "I did not have hearing a Moises Alou reference on my Final Four bingo card for today."  [Ed. Note - seriously, this guy was a dead ringer for Dr. Hodgins.  Here is a picture for reference.]

16:44 - As we are standing in Whistle Stop, a lady at the table next to us notices Kev-O's Kentucky shirt and asks him where he was from.  Turns out, she owns a condo in Kev-O's hometown, and has been vacationing there for 25 years.  Sue was her name, and it turns out she was at the Final Four with 5 other of her friends, all in their late 50's.  This is their 12th consecutive Final Four, and in their words, "This is our girls trip.  Husbands not invited!"  They are basically us.  We keep telling you that this event is a must-see, every year.

17:55 - Leave Whistle Stop for Lucas Oil.

18:02 - Enter Lucas Oil Stadium.

18:09 - Tip-Off.  Radio Silence.

18:33 - Who are we kidding.  During a timeout, the jumbotron contains some information introducing us to the teams.  It lists Illinois as being in Champaign, Illinois.  Kev-O immediately notices that it does not say "Urbana-Champaign" as is usually the case.  Pepster notes that it is because under the current administration anything hyphenated is considered DEI, and they don't want to lose their federal funding.

19:08 - UConn's mascot is definitely a furry.  Kev-O surmises that the person wearing the costume has to sign a contract requiring him/her to remove the UConn logo before attending any furry conventions.

20:01 - We move to the standing room only section from our seats, and end up next to what we are pretty sure a couple that will engage in domestic violence later, especially since they - and their friends - are decked out head-to-toe in Illinois gear.  We feel bad for the guy.  [Ed. Note - she is a trainwreck, and will warrant several mentions in this post.  We will call her DV for reference.]

UConn wins and advances to the finals.

20:55 - Chainsmokers "concert" between the games.  They are not good.  Pepster explains that "Chainsmokers" is American for "Coldplay!"

21:06 - In between games, DV comes into the middle of Pepster and Sinickal's conversation.  Asks them their names, calls Pepster a liar because she doesn't believe anyone has that name, and then says, "Guess what my name is.  Guess what name a girl who grew up in a shed on a farm would have."  Pepster guesses, "Baaaa!"  She goes "So close.  It's Alexandra."  We look at the guy she is with.  He just shrugs his shoulders.

21:08 - DV starts attempting to breakdance, on the concrete floor of the concourse.  Emphasis on "trying".  She would have lost to Raygun in the Olympics.  Then she comes back up to Sinickal and starts playing Vanessa Carlton's A Thousand Miles on air piano.

21:12 - Since we were in the standing room only section, we were sharing a table with a couple who attended Illinois, and their daughter - who is a Purdue alumna but wearing a Illinois shirt because her father "paid for her college" - and her fiance'.  Very nice people.  Good conversations.  The fiance' says that after meeting us he wants to start a guys' trip to the final four.  But anyway, the daughter and her parents want to go walk around a bit, and says to us to keep their half of the table.  Pepster says, "Of course.  Unless your Eastern European players come up and try to annex it."

21:14 - DV comes back and is being uncomfortably close to Sinickal.  Not only does Sinickal put his hands in his pockets, he turns to Kev-O and says, "I am putting my hands in my pockets.  There will not be any confusion about this situation.  DV's man once again just shrugs.

21:16 - Tip-Off.  More Radio Silence.

21:38 - Time of Death.

22:00 - So one of the people hanging out with DV starts a conversation with Sinickal because he is wearing his Syracuse orange colors.  He says Illinois is the only true orange.  Sinickal reminds him that his school name is the Syracuse Orange!  [Ed. Note - we heard this conversation 1,100 times today.]  But, Dave is wearing a Chicago Bears jacket, so when Sinickal says "Bear Down!", Dave came up and properly introduced himself.

As a side note - This town is 75% Illinois fans.  The Michigan presence is disappointing, as is Arizona.  UConn - after having won 2 of the last 3 titles - just doesn't care.  Here is Illinois student section versus UConn's.

One section is full.  The other is not.  And pretty much every Illinois fan is from Chicago.  Although we all know that means the northern and western suburbs.  Their defeat means this stadium will be a ghost town Monday night.

22:45 - Michigan goes up 56-36.  Time to leave.

22:51 - JESUS is it cold!!!

22:58 - Enter Loughmillers.  We beat the rush.  Several tables for us to choose from.

00:14 - Finishing up at Loughmillers.  Decide to Door Dash to the house.  For some reason, Arby's makes sense.  Sinickal places an Order.

00:15 - Arby's is not available for Door Dash.  White Castle it is.

00:26 - Enter our Uber.  A valet at the Westin hotel - which is next to Loughmillers and the location we gave for pickup to the Uber - literally yells at our driver for trying to enter Westin's driveway.  Uber driver rolls down his window and says, "You didn't have to yell.  You could be nice."

00:28 - TV Off by Kendrick comes on the radio.  Kev-O asks the driver if he could please turn up the radio.

00:28:15 - The driver turned up the radio so loud, that the sound was distorted and we were all about 2 decibels shy of bursting our tympanic membranes.

00:40 - At home, and The A-Team is on.  Sinickal is quoting the movie verbatim.

01:10 - White Castle arrives.

01:22 - Pepster calls it.

01:37 - Tony calls it.

At the conclusion of the A-Team - Sinickal and Kev-O call it.

Final Four Chronicles - The Semi-Finals

THE SEMI-FINALS

Day 3

Saturday, March 31, 2018

We all wake up flummoxed on the events of yesterday, and a little tired as it was a long, long day.  But that is OK because today is all about the basketball.  We have semi-final action between Loyola and Michigan, followed by Kansas versus Villanova.  As much as this trip is about friendship, camaraderie, having fun and good cities – the purpose is basketball, and that starts today.

6:30 – Road to the Final Four 5K registration.

8:00 – Road to the Final Four 5K race begins.

7:30 – 8:40 – We all wake up.  Thus, once again we missed the Road to the Final Four 5K.  Congratulations to all participants who helped to raise money for the Coaches versus Cancer charity and other pediatric oncology servicing organizations.

8:51 – Hopps and Tony make a coffee/breakfast run.  Some days breakfast sandwiches just taste better.

9:41 – Sinickal and Tony just now receive the text that Hopps and Pepster ducked into the Republic of Texas last night.

9:47 – Hopps screams out Oh My God!  Nobody moves, turns around or in any way acknowledges Hopps.  Sinickal notes that we should be worried that nobody even flinches when he does that anymore.

10:13 – SportsCenter showing the Cleveland Cavaliers highlights, specifically about LeBron breaking the consecutive games record for scoring double digit points.  Hopps, at the dining room table behind everyone in the living room, exclaims that LeBron has three people above him.  After a brief pause, Pepster turns his head, rolls his eyes and says, “OK, I’ll bite.  Who are the three?”  Jordan (of course) Russell (Hopps is a Boston homer) and Magic (at least he didn’t say Bird).  [Ed. Note – Not a bad three, but if Chamberlain switches places with Russell, the Celtics probably have 15 or 16 championships in a row, and although Magic is great, he might not even be the best Laker.  See Abdul-Jabbar, Kareem.

11:00 – We turn on Thursdays episode of the Dan BeBatard Show just to hear his live call of Ian Happ’s home run on the first pitch of the entire MLB season against the Marlins.  The call consists of massive laughter, screaming, the phrase “Welcome Derek Jeter” and “That concludes our Marlins coverage for the season.

11:10 – We decide to watch Friday’s episode of the Dan LeBatard Show because he is hilarious.  The highlights, Stugotz’s rant on Sister Jean which concludes by him saying, “If Loyola makes it to the Championship game, I guarantee she makes it into the Basketball Hall of Fame” (then under his breath “Mo Cheeks”) .  For those that don’t know, former Philadelphia Sixer Very Good (I cannot call him great) was just elected into the basketball Hall of Fame, along with such luminaries as Dino Radja and Charlie Scott.  Another highlight of the show is LeBatard’s interview with Ice-T, who admits that growing up he robbed banks.  When LeBatard tells him that he might want to disclaim that and say he was just joking on the air, Ice-T mentions that “We have a wonderful thing is this country called the Statute of Limitations.”

11:13 – In the entrances and exits of the Dan LeBatard Show, the camera pans out from a picture of the beach.  Today – or actually Friday’s show, we clearly see a red and blue flag hanging from the lifeguard tower, which Pepster points out generally means no swimming because of rough, or rip tides (red) and Portuguese Man-O-War (blue).  Tony the exclaims that he hopes President Trump doesn’t find out the Portuguese are getting into the country via the shore.  And this concludes the political portion of the show.

11:30 – Pepster and Sinickal struggle with which 30 for 30 to watch on demand.  Settle on something basketball related, and decide not to watch any of them because we don’t want to get stuck going down that rabbit hole and end up missing the games.

12:40 – Leave for downtown.

13:19 – Lost Hopps already.

13:21 – Strong Michigan entry into the Riverwalk

13:30 – Pop into the Thirsty Aztec.  Young college-aged kid wearing a Villanova Scottie Reynolds jersey exits the establishment saying loudly, “I didn’t realize until I just realized”.

13:42 – Walking down the Riverwalk and see a guy in a powder blue shirt that says simply “Duke sucks”.  Since we virtually have to walk single file on the RiverWalk, Sinickal sees it first and toasts him.  Tony toasts him.  Pepster toasts him.  Hopps toasts him.  Then other people we don’t know behind us toast him.

13:50 – Head into Tex’s Sports Bar for some food because it has a good punny name.  And an available table which is not the norm at the restaurants along the Riverwalk.  In fact, one restaurant even had a sign “We are no longer taking names for our Wait List”.

14:07 – Four guys settle in at the table next to us all wearing Villanova gear.  Start up a conversation with Sinickal since he is wearing his Syracuse shirt and the former Big East rivalry between to two clubs.  Guys assume we all went to Syracuse, not noticing Tony’s Texas shirt and Hopps’s BC pullover.  Sinickal tells them Pepster went to an Ivy-covered school near Boston.  Guys obviously missing Sinickal’s context cluse reply, “Which one?”

14:26 – Pepster and Sinickal engage in a conversation about the old Big East.  Noting that Villanova has a great history with the league, Pepster queries if anyone from Villanova even makes an All-Time Big East squad.  Without going into much discussion of the bench, Sinickal and Pepster, settle on a starting 5 of:  PG – Pearl Washington (Syracuse); SG – Ray Allen (Connecticut); SF – Chris Mullins (St. John’s); PF – Derrick Coleman (Syracuse); C – Patrick Ewing (Georgetown).  Others on the team would be: C - Alonzo Mourning (Georgetown); PF – Jerome Lane (Pittsburgh); PG – Allen Iverson (Georgetown) (who would start except his college career was only 2 years);  PG – Kemba Walker (Connecticut).  OK, I guess we did discuss the bench.

14:51 – Hopps is astounded at the number of people wearing Loyola gear.  Sinickal explains to him that Chicago is the third largest city in the country, and has no natural college affiliation like places we are used to, and that the City of Chicago is supporting Loyola as a city, regardless of college affiliation.  Hopps is struggling to believe him.  (By the way, if Northwestern ever makes a final four, that city will be inundated with purple).

14:54 – Young, twenty-something wearing Loyola gear asks if he can sit at the table recently vacated by the Villanova guys.  We tell him yes and then start discussing the Final Four.  Guy admits he did not go to Loyola, but knew someone who dated someone that knew someone who did.  Hopps becomes annoyed (well, even more annoyed than usual).

14:57 – We realize that our food has not arrived yet.   Hopps is even more annoyed (as are the rest of us).  This is a bit of foreshadowing on service for the day, only we didn’t know it at the time.

15:26 – Food FINALLY arrives.

15:58 – To the Alamodome.

16:17 – Pass by an NCAA Final Four employee carrying a sign with a question mark on it.  Sinickal asks him, “What does the sign mean?”  Employee answers “Information.”  Sinickal responds, thanks, I just was looking for that information”.

16:18 – Sinickal to Pepster, “Those guys hate guys like us.  Just asking them purposefully dumb questions every two minutes”.

16:23 – After the off ramp from the walkover to the stadium, Army band is Playing Michael Jackson’s Rock With You.

16:28 – On the Alamodome campus.  The way they are funneling people here and there and splitting up the crowd entering the campus is logistically great.  Makes things a lot easier, and no long lines, even through security (which was set up well outside the perimeter of the stadium.)  Unfortunately the people and the signage that make for great entrance logistics ended up making horrible exit logistics.

16:32 – See a guy wearing a hoodie that says, “I DISAGREE.  But I respect your right to be stupid.”

16:33 – And Loyola takes the lead.

16:38 – Seeing two more Loyola fans, Hopps exclaims, “That’s Chicago”.  This we are sure will not come off anywhere near as funny as it was at the time.

16:47 – Settle into seats for the games.

16:59 – Great rendition of the national anthem as the NCAA did it right this time.  They had one student from each of the four participating institutions.  Each student sang two lines solo, then finished the song together.  Michigan’s grad student clearly studies opera and dominates the end of the song, but it was amazing.

17:09 – Tip-off to Game 1.

Radio Silence (mostly) during the game.

In the first half Michigan shoots 9/31 and Loyola shoots 10/25.  Not good basketball.  Second half is much, much better and played at a faster pace.

18:12 - The spirit teams for Michigan and Loyola are not very strong at all.  Not a whole lot of spirit going on.

19:45 – We head to the concourse for some nourishment between the games.  Concessions are out of almost everything meaningful.

Radio silence (mostly) during game 2.

Entire game:  Villanova is ON FIRE from three.  In fact, we see security running toward the extinguishers.

21:02 – If I ever have to answer the question “Do you remember the worst version of Jungle Boogie that you ever heard”, the answer is “Yes I do.  March 31, 2018 at 21:02 by the University of Kansas Pep Band.”

21:15 – Kansas band now butchers Cameo’s Word Up.  Hopps remarks, “The Kansas band has no soul”.

Villanova shows why they are easily the best team in the NCAA right now, and have been all year long.  They should be a heavy favorite for the championship game.

22:20 – After trying to coordinate a meet-up all afternoon, we run into Christy and her friend Kat to say hello after the game.

22:22 – Say goodbye to Christy and Kat as we go our respective ways for dinner.

22:41 – We have comfortably vacated the Alamodome vicinity and outside of the crowd.  There is NO chance we hit the Riverwalk tonight as it is hard to maneuver down there with just a light crowd.  We can only imagine what it will be like with 77,000 people vacating the game just blocks away.

22:56 – Hit La Gloria for dinner as we hear that San Antonio has pretty good Mexican food, or at least Tex-Mex.  That statement is accurate as our dinner is really good.  In a continuation of today’s lunch problems, service is really SLOW.  Unlike lunch, this place is staffed correctly for a big event as there are employees everywhere; ours is just slow.  Food comes up fairly quickly, so we don’t mind the rest of slowness too much.

00:09 – On the Lyft ride home we end up in a discussion in which Tony recounts some of the weirdest situations that he has ever been in, concluding with “In my past I have had some unsavory friends”.  Sinickal responds with, “I have too”.  Pepster adds that “some of them might be in this car”.   Hopps, “Come on guys, I am sitting right here!”

00:17 – Off to bed.  We have another tee time tomorrow.

NCAA Tournament Pool - Elite 8/Day 1

"Ramble On.  And now's the time, the time is now to sing my song!" - Led Zeppelin

The Loyola Ramblers are going to the Final Four in San Antonio. And yes, there is a 100% chance I am making all types of Gryffindor jokes if I see their fans traipsing around San Antonio in their scarves.

Also, if I see team chaplain Sister Jean, then I will buy her a shot of the sacramental wine!  As it turns out, Loyola can play.  CBS showed the fact that 7 of Loyola's players won state championships in high school, and another won a championship at a JUCO.  To quote one person in the pool, "Do you know what winners do?  WIN!".

Loyola becomes just the fourth 11 seed to make it to the Final Four, joining LSU in 1986, George Mason in 2006 and Virginia Commonwealth in 2011.  This brings us to today's tournament history.

LSU, led by leading scorer John Williams, who in 2006 set - and still holds - the SEC record for most rebounds in a season with 313, and coached by the incomparable Dale Brown, defeated Purdue in double overtime in the first round, and then beat Memphis on a last second shot in the second round.  LSU knocked off Georgia Tech 70-64 in the Sweet Sixteen and then the top seeded Kentucky Wildcats 59-57 in the Elite 8.  :LSU traversed the hardest possible road for an 11 seed by beating the 6 seed (Purdue), 3 seed (Memphis), 2 seed (Georgia Tech) and 1 seed (Kentucky).  LSU lost in the Final Four to eventual champion Louisville, which was led by remarkable freshman Pervis Ellison.  LSU was helped by the fact that even as an 11 seed - it hosted the first two round games.  After this season the NCAA instituted the rule that no team can play a game in a stadium/arena in which it played 4 games or more in during the regular season.

In 2006, in a Final Four that Your Tournament Host remembers well - as do a lot of you Gators in the Pool, George Mason made it to the Final Four in Indianapolis  (MMMmmmm - St. Elmo Steakhouse!!!).  George Mason's fans traveled IN FORCE to this game, which should have come as no surprise as George Mason is not exactly a small school - it is the largest university in Virginia.  The Patriots were a remarkably well-balanced team with all five starters averaging between 11.0 and 13.7 points per game.  George Mason was led by Jim Larranaga, the best Cuban coach in all of sports.  George Mason was selected into the tournament as an at-large team, as they lost in the semi-finals of their conference tournament.  In the first round the Patriots took down the six seed in Michigan State 75-65, and then the 3 seed North Carolina 65-60 to make the Sweet Sixteen.  There, George Mason defeated fellow mid-major Wichita State 63-55 and then top seeded Connecticut 86-84 to reach the Final Four, where they were ultimately trounced by eventual champion Florida 73-58.

Virginia Commonwealth was led by senior forward Jamie Skeen, and coached by my personal favorite Shaka Smart.  Like LSU and George Mason before them, VCU received an at-large bid, which is rare for the typical mid-majors.  This at-large bid came with a catch; VCU had to play USC in the "Play-In Game", which they won 59-46.  With one win already under their belt, the Rams easily dispatched Georgetown in the first round 74-56, and Purdue in the second round 94-76.  The Sweet Sixteen was a tougher matchup as VCU beat Florida State 72-71, and then defeated top-seeded Kansas 71-61 to reach the Sweet Sixteen.  In the Final Four in Houston, VCU ran into a stout Butler team that advanced to their second consecutive championship game, losing to Duke in 2010 and Connecticut in 2011.

Joining Loyola will be the Big 10 Champion Michigan Wolverines.  This means that the questions asked by one person in this pool of "Can we get FSU ... in the Final Four ... in a warm weather city ... with no open container laws?' is now answered with a resounding "NO!"  This Michigan win was important to more than just their team, school and fans.  It was very important to this pool.  Because ...

WE HAVE A NEW LEADER.  Day Yi 2 of New York City has catapulted himself into first place.  Not only that, but Thomas Bean 1 of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida is now in second place.  In fact, our early round leader Bryan van Gorder of Canajoharie, New York and Hollywood, California has fallen from first to sixth, as those that selected Michigan into the Final Four vaulted up the standings.

In fact 19 different entries had the Wolverines in the Final Four, and since nobody selected Loyola, this could be a 19 way tie for first for the "Pick of the Day".  But, I just don't want to type that many people's name down, so I will select one person from those 19.  The "Pick of the Day" goes to Hannah Sosa of Riviera Beach, Florida, not just for selecting Michigan, but for putting up with many during NCAA Tournament time!!!

We still have only four of the original thirteen different champions remaining, and that is guaranteed to change as Kansas and Duke face-off in the last Elite 8 game.  The only question is ... will Villanova join that winner.

Those teams will continue to be listed in every update in bold so long as they remain in the pool.  ArizonaCincinnati, Duke, FloridaGonzaga, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Michigan State, North Carolina, Villanova, Virginia and Xavier.

Remember to check my math, and let me know if you have any questions regarding your bracket.

On to the standings ...

1.  Day Yi 2 - 77 - Villanova

2.  Thomas Bean 1 - 75 - Villanova

3.  Anthony LaPira - 72 - Michigan State
     Ty Leatherman - 72 - Virginia
     Biscuit Zdrowak - 72 - Michigan State

6.  Bryan van Gorder - 71 - North Carolina

7.  Carolyn Fowler and Jane Reynolds - 69 - Villanova
     Sasha Moon - 69 - Villanova
     George Walks 3 - 69 - Virginia

10.  George Walks 6 - 68 - Michigan State

11.  Dan Barsky - 67 - Virginia
       Steven Usma 3 - 67 - Michigan
